    The Yalta Conference took place in Crimea, Russia. The conference was held so U.S President Franklin R. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin could all make important decisions about the future progress of the war and the postwar world. This led to the Cold War.
  • Berlin Blockade Begins

    Berlin Blockade Begins
    The Berlin Blockade was an attempt by the Soviet Union to stop France, Great Britain and the U.S from being able to travel to their sectors.
  • NATO Formed

    NATO Formed
    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed to protect Europe from the Soviets. The founding countries of NATO are Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, UK and US. If the Soviet Union attacked one of the countries that had signed the treaty, all the countries that were apart of NATO would go to war.
  • Berlin Blockade Ends

    On June 26 1948 American and British militaries began airlifting supplies to West Berlin. This made the Berlin Blockade useless. The Soviets eventually decided to meet with the Western Allies and agreed to end the blockade.
  • Warsaw Pact Formed

    Warsaw Pact Formed
    The Warsaw Pact was formed to counter the threat from the NATO countries. The members of the Warsaw Pact were the Soviet Union, Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland and Romania.

    The Berlin Wall was built by the Soviet Union to stop East Germans from fleeing to the West.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    The Cuban Missile Crisis was a time of tension between the Soviet Union, Cuba and the United States. The tension began when the US discovered that the Soviets were building missile sites in Cuba. On October 28, the Soviets and Cubans agreed to take away the missiles if America promised not to attack Cuba.
  • Berlin Wall Demolished

    Berlin Wall Demolished
    When Hungary opened they’re border it allowed East Germans to travel to West Germany. This made the Berlin Wall ineffective, for this reason it was demolished.
  • Warsaw Pact Ends

    In the late 1980’s the Warsaw Pact started to collapse because of the anti-Soviet and anticommunist movements in Eastern Europe. In 1990, East Germany left the Warsaw Pact and Poland and Czechoslovakia indicated their strong desire to leave. On March 31 1991, the pact’s Political Consultative Committee met to formally recognise the end of the Warsaw Pact.
  • End of the Soviet Union

    One of the main reasons the Soviet Union did not succeed was because their economy fell apart. This ended the Cold War.
