    In August 29, 1949 the Soviets exploded its first atomic bomb which surprised and frightened Americans because we didn't know the Soviets had this level of intelligence yet. Truman ,in response, built up the US's Nuclear weapons to stop the spread of the Soviet influence around the globe.

    On October 4, 1957 at 10:29 p.m. the Soviets launched the world's first artificial satellite, Sputnik. When Sputnik was put into orbit the US was caught off guard because we were planning on launching our satellite the next year. Which ended up causing the "space race". When the U.S finally launched their satellite, The Explorer, the Soviets already sent the Sputnik 2 into space with a dog aboard then they sent the first man and the first woman into space which put them far ahead the U.S.

    On July 20, 1969 the US accomplished one of the greatest thing in history by sending the first man to the moon named Neil Armstrong. When Armstrong landed he said the iconic "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." This event fueled the space race against the Soviets even more becasue we were the first to actually send a human to the moon.

    In the Olympic games of 1972 the US played the USSR in basketball. Many people claimed that the game was rigged with the referees calling very questional calls against the US but never against the USSR which made many Americans protest becasue the USSR ended up winning.

    On Febuary 22, 1980 the USA olympic team defeated the Soviet Union who were way better equiped with very professional athletes. The US was the underdog with a team of players that were brought together just for this event and with the team going on to win the gold everyone was suprised. This event was later turned into a movie called "Miracle on Ice"
