    Missouri entered as a slave state and Maine entered as a free state. The 36' 30" line was drawn to indicate which territories would allow slavery.

    Compromise of 1850

    California enters as a free state. The area from the Mexican Cession is divided into Utah and New Mexico. Slavery is to be decided by popular soveirgenty. The compromise also created the fugitive slave law and settled border problems between New Mexico and Texas.

    Fugitive Slave Law

    This law required citizens to catch runaway slaves. If a person didn't comply, they would either be fined 1000 dollars or put in jail for 6 months. Judges would recieve 10 dollars for returning a slave and 5 dollars for freeing one. Northerners hated this law because it forced them to participate in slavery.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin is a book written by Harrit Beecher Stowe. It was written to show the evil of slavery by telling the story of a slave who was whipped to death by his owner. Many Northerners changed their view on slavery after reading the book. Southerners tried to claim the book was full of lies and fake news.

    Kansas-Nebraska Act

    This act divided land into Kansas and Nebraska territories. It also stated that slavery would be decided by popular soveirgenty. This act led to violence in the Senate. Conflict arised when people for and against slavery were put into one area. Northerners believed this act repealed the Missouri Compromise.

    John Brown and four of his sons kill five pro-slavery men in their sleep because of the violence in Kansas. John claims he was doing what God told him to do.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott was a slave. His owner died after moving back into a slave state. After that, Dred Scott had an abolitionist attorney file a lawsuit for him. He lost and was told he was not a citizen so he could not file a lawsuit. He was also told that Congress could not ban slavery in any of the territories. This went against the Missouri Compromise. Southerners loved it while Northerners hated it.

    Lincoln-Douglas Debate

    This was a debate between Lincoln and Douglas. Douglas believed that slavery should be decided through popular soveirgenty. Lincoln believed that slavery should not be able to spread into the territories. Additionally, Lincoln thought that the Nation could not survive if the Union continued to be ripped apart through conflict over slavery.
  • Raid on Harper's Ferry

    Raid on Harper's Ferry

    John Brown led five blacks and thirteen whites into Harper's Ferry to raid an arsenal and start a slave revolt. Many of his men died and John Brown was arrested, found guilty, and hanged.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860

    In this election, Lincoln ran against Douglass. Lincoln won yet having the south disagree with what Lincoln believed in and did not like him as a person. The southerners were angry and wanted to break away from the union.
