Lincoln wins the presidential election and the North is happy and the South is upset. -
Secession
The South secede from the Union and form the Confederacy. -
Emancipation Proclamation
It didn’t free all slaves immoderately. It freed slaves from the states that were in rebellion. It changed the war from restoring the Union to also ending slavery. -
Gettysburg Address
Lincoln’s speech after Gettysburg. He talks about our nation, equality, and liberty. He speaks about a new north of freedom. This encouraged more people to fight for the Union. -
March to the Sea
Was a destruction path from Atlanta to Savannah led by Sherman. He led Union soldiers through this path and destroyed crops, cities, railroads, etc. It was total war. -
Appomattox
General Lee knows the war is over and the South have lost. He surrenders to General Grant. They end the war on good terms and Grant welcomes Lee back into the Union. -
Lincoln’s Assassination
Lincoln went to Ford Theatre as a celebration of the war ending. There, he was shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth. -
Reconstruction
Was a rebuild of the USA after the civil war and death of Lincoln. Many acts and amendments were passed during this time period to fix what was wrong with the US.
