Then the Confederate opened fire knocking shells into fort Sumter. The battle ended one day later with a Confederate victory and this signaled the start of the war.

This was General Lee's first attack on the north. Luckily, a Union soldier found Lee's secret battle plans wrapped around a cigar. So when Lee crossed into Maryland the Union was ready for them. After McClellan was fired, General Burnside was in Command and led an attack heading for Richmond. But while heading there got caught up in Robert E. Lee's troops in Fredricksburg. They had to cross a river to get to Fredericksburg but the bridges took a while to arrive. So the confederacy had time to plan for the attack. After the bridges got there they ran into the city. The Confederacy was beating the Union so bad that a Confederate sergeant helped a Union soldier. The Confederacy won.

The Union sends General Hooker to try to take Richmond again. He met Lee and Stonewall Jackson. The Union lost but the Confederates accidentaly shot Jackson. He died 8 days later.

The most major battle in the war. General Robert E. Lee invades the north hoping to take the capital. The Union and Confederacy troops met in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. To try to flank the Union, Lee sends General Pickett to charge at them. In the famous Pickett's Charge the Union shoots the Confederacy forces down and Lee retreats.
