  • The Battle of Bull Run

    The battle of Bull Run started on July 21, 1861 in the Confederate state of Virginia. Many believed that the Union would win to close out the Civil war, but in the end the Confederate won and kept the battle alive. After this battle, both the Union and the Confederate knew that the war would be even longer and harder. The day after the battle, President Lincoln called for the enlistment, or support, of 500,000 new Union soldiers.
  • The Battle of Ironclads

    The battle of Ironclads took place on March 8, 1862 on a body of water off the coast of Virginia called Hampton Roads. An Ironclad was a new kind of warship that was first used in the Civil War. In the end, neither the Union or the confederates won the battle. The battle lasted just 1 day.
  • The Battle of Antietam

    The Battle of Antietam started on September 17, 1862, in tear a town named Sharpsburg, Maryland. It was a important battle for the Union because the British and the French stop their support for the Confederate, which mean they had to fight alone. Neither side won the battle, but the Union said they had won because Lee's soldiers were forced to retreat.
  • The Battle of Fredricksburg

    The battle of Fredricksburg started on December 11, 1862, in a town in the northern part of Virginia called Fredricksburg. This time, the Confederate won and the Union lost about 12,653 men, while the Confederate lost only 5,377 men. The battle lasted 4 days.
  • The Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation was signed by Abraham Lincoln which would free slaves. The slave did not get freed right away though. Most got freed after the Civil war. This was signed on January 1, 1863. In this Lincoln did not want to not allow slaves in slave states that were still in the Union. Even from this one big did happen... And that was that more than 200,000 former slaves helped the North with the Civil war.
  • The Siege of Vicksburg

    The Siege of Vicksburg started on May 18, 1863. It lasted longer than most other wars because it ended on July 4, 1863. A siege is when a group of soldiers attack the other side and takes supplies. It was a huge win for the Union because they now had control of the Mississippi River. The Siege of Vicksburg also weaken the Confederate because the war split them in half.
  • The Battle of Gettysburg

    The battle of Gettysburg started on July 1, 1863, in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. This was the farthest north the Confederate could get the Union. The war lasted 2 days.
  • The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House

    The battle of Spotsylvania started on May 8, 1864 in a small town called Spotsylvania, which is located by Richmond, Virginia. Although nobody won the war, this war showed that General Grant of the Union was not going to stop until General Lee of the Confederate gives up. The war lasted 10 days.
  • Sherman's March to The Sea

    Sherman's march to the sea was a march through the state of Georgia. It began in Atlanta and ended in Savannah. The march started on November 15, 1864, to December 21, 1864. It was the most devastating blow to the South, leaving cities, towns, and farms burned to the ground. General Lee's army was left starving and exhausted and they tried to escape from general Sherman, but was forced to surrender to general Grant and the Union which ended the war.
  • The End to the Civil War

    On April 9, 1865, the Confederate tried to escape from Union's general Sherman, but failed and surrendered to general Grant of the Union. This had meant that the Union had won the war.
