  • Fort Sumter

    The battle of Fort Sumter began at 4:30 the morning of April 12, 1861, in Charleston harbor. The Confederates, led by Beauregard, attacked the US garrison to prevent the arival of supply ships. However, Major Anderson refused to surrender the fort at first. Although after 34 intense hours the Fort fell into rthe hands of the Confederates, sparking the Civil War.

    1st Bull Run
    The 1st Bull Run occurred in July of 1861 in Virginia. It was a Confederate victory, giving the South great hope for the war. Their leader Beauregard recieved great praise for this victory, and the North was disapointed in McDowell for this loss due to the fact that the North was expected to win the entire war almost instantly.
  • Battle of Hampton Roads

    Battle of Hampton Roads
    The Battle of Hampton Roads was the first major use of ironclads during the Civil War. The battle took place off the coast of Virginia and then in Hampton Roads from March 8 to March 9, 1862. The Union were commanded by Lt. Worden and the Confederates were led by Buchanan. The conclusion was that the Union received a strategic victory for the blockade remained strong.

    The Battle of Shiloh occured between April 6-7, 1862 in Tennessee. The The Union was led by theyr star general Grant, who led them to vicyory. The Confederares were led by Johnston, who was later killed during the battle. Another gain for the Union, was receiving control of the Tennessee River.

    The 2nd Bull Run battle in Virigina happend in August !862 between the 29th abd the 30th. The Union accepted defeat due to the fact that Pope was not providing great leadership. The Conferderates were immensely beneficial from this battle because they were led by Jackson. During the two day battle Jackson received his famous nickname Stonewall Jackson because he blocked everthing that cmae his way.

    The Battle of Antietam took place in Maryland on September 17, 1862. The Union comander was McClellan and the Confederate comander was Lee, but neither of them were truly successful due to the fact the battle was a militry draw. However, the battle was considered a polictical victory for the Union because it institued the Emacipation Proclamtion. The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest one day battle of that time period due to 23,00 deaths.

    The Battle of Federicksburg took place on December 13, 1862 in Virgina. The Union was led by Burnside, who turned out to be a disappointment . The Cofederates, led by Lee, had dug trenches, introducing new warfare, won by a landslide. The Union's 12600 casulaties nearly doubled the Confederates casualties.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    The Emancipation Proclamation was issued January 1, 1862 by Abraham Lincoln. The Proclamation declared all slaves in the Confederacy free. Although the Proclamation freed very few slaves, in fact it actually motivated the South more. In spite of the North, the South completely ignored the Emancipation Proclamation making it unsuccessful.

    The Battle of Chancellorsville was known as Lee's perfect battle. Occurring May 2-4,1863 in Virginia, the Confederates gained their lasat major victory. However, even though the Confederates were victorious they barred a giant loss, the death of Stonewall Jackson. The death of jackson was a win in itself for the North. The Union were led by Hooker, who had good leadership skills but still not as strong as Lee's skills.

    The Siege of Vicksburg was considered one of the turning points of the Civil War due to the fact that the Union gained control of the Mississippi River, accomplishing half of their strategy. The battle took place from May 18-June 4, 1863, in Vicksburg Mississippi. The Uion were led to their victory by Grant and the Confederates were led to a devastating defeat by General Lee.

    The Battle of Gettysburg was known to contribute to the turning point of the Civil War because it was the last time the South attacked the Union.The battle occurred in Pennsylvania on July 13, 1863. The Union, the victor, was led by Grant, who practically wiped out the Confederate Army led by Lee. Another impetual benifit from the Battle of Gettysburg was the Gettysburg Adress, one of Lincolon's most famous speeches.

    Gaining control of Atlanta signified thye near end of the war. The Union, led by Sherman, took control of Atlant, Georgia between July 16-September 2, 1864. The Confederates were defeated under the leadership of Hooker.

    The 13th Amendment was urged by Lincoln in 1864, but Congress did not accept it until January 1865. The 13th Amendment stated that all enslaved people, anywhere in the United States, were set free. This was even accepted by some Southern states, for altogether 27 states.

    On April 9, 1865, Lee had finally met his match and was forced to surrender. Grant accepted Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. Grant offered generous terms of surrender since the south had practically beed destroyed during the war. Grant felt mixed emotions over the surrneder, while Lee must have only felt shame.
  • Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

    Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
    Five days after the Confederate surrender Abraham Lincoln went to a play at Ford's Theatre. There John Wilkes Booth snuck into the box where the president was sitting and shot him in the back of the head. To make his escape Booth lept over the balcony and scrambled away. Even though he got away, he was soon hunted down and killed along with many other of his accomplices. The damage was accessed, and the conclusion was that the bullet could not be removed from Lincoln's brain, leaving him to die.
