    This was the bloodiest day in the U.S. military history at Antietam in Maryland. By the night, 26,000 men were wounded, missing, and dead. Robert E. Lee and his troops withdrew themselves to Virginia.

  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    President Lincoln passes the final draft of the Emancipation Proclamation which freed all slaved in Confederate territories. Black soldiers were able to enlist in the Union Army.
  • Chancellorsville

    Chancellorsville
    The Yankees are defeated by Lee's smaller troops at the Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia. The Confederate's General Stonewall Jackson was wounded by one of this own soldiers. Union lost 17,000 out of 130,000. The Confederates lost 13,000 out of 60,000.

  • Vicksburg Backs Down

    The last Confederate blockade on the Mississippi surrendered to General Grant. The Union now is control of Vicksburg and the Confederacy is split into two.
