The Republicans nominated Abraham Lincoln. He won mostly all of the North and his name sometimes didn't eve appear on the South's ballot.

May states feared that the government would not orotect Southern Rights. This caused Southern States to secede.

More Southern states seceded, this caused the other states to form the Confederate States of America. They chose Jefferson Davis to be the Confederate President.

On the day of Lincolns inaugration it recieved a dispatch that FOrt Sumter had been attacked. Jefferson Davis ordered his troops to open fire on Fort Sumter.

This was the first battle of the Civil War fought in Northern Virginia. The Union retreated after losing most of their forces.

The Union and Confederate armies clashed and fought one of the bloodiest battles of the war. When the fight ended close to 6,000 Union and Confederate soldiers died.

The proclamation stated that all enslaved people in the states controlled by the COnfederacy were freed. This had a major effect on the continuation of the war.

The Battle of Gettysburg lasted from July 1- July 3. The Union own the battle. The Battle of Vicksburg took place on July 4 when Ulysses S. Grant Union troops attacked Vicksburg, Mississippi. The Union won this battle as well.

Abraham Lincoln spoke at a cemetary dedication where he spoke for two-minutes. The speech helped the war-weary Americans look beyond the images of the battlefield.

In the summer of 1864 the chances of Lincolns reelection was looking slim. THen when Union troops attacke Mobile Bay and controled the Gulf of Mexico Lincoln was reelected.

Genneral Lee surrender to Genral Grant in a small Virginia village called the Appomattox Court House. The Confederate soldiers ahd to lay down their arms and Grant let them go without capture and they could ride home on their horses.
