Freedom Summer was an unsuccessful voter registration drive to increase the number of black voters in Mississippi. Two white student volunteers, as well as a local black man went missing. Six weeks later their bodies were found. They were killed by the Klu Klux Klan who had been protected by the local police. Outrage over the murders brought international attention to the civil rights movement. It was a contributing factor to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Acts of 1965. -
Act outlawed discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, religion or country of origin. Segregation in businesses and public spaces such as theaters, restaurants and hotels was also then outlawed and other Jim Crow laws. -
A 600+ peaceful demonstration protesting the murder of Jimmie Lee Jackson by a white police officer that turned violent when forcibly stopped by Alabama state and local police at Edmund Pettus Bridge. When demonstrators started to push forward they were viciously beaten and teargassed sending many to the hospital. Nationally and internationally recognized for their deep connection with community and big part of the Black Power Movement. Black Power empathized black/racial pride and promote black culture, collective and black values, defense from oppression and actions against white supremacy. -
Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on the balcony of a motel in Memphis, Tennessee. His murder set off protests/riots across the country as peopled mourned his death. James Earl, the man that murdered MLK, was a white supremacist who was unhappy with the increase in black influence on US society.
