  • Invention of the Cotton Gin

    Invention of the Cotton Gin

Eli Whitney's Cotton Gin was created to pick out the seeds from cotton fibers more efficiently. Although the cotton gin reduced the labor put into removing seeds from cotton, it did not deduce the amount of slavery there was in the cotton industry. Growing cotton became more profitable;therefore, increasing the need/want for slaves and more land.
  • Invention of the Cotton Gin Part 2

The cotton gin has an impact on sectionalism and secession because it encouraged slavery, and will potentially lead to a separation between the north and the south. Also since the south was fairly new at the time of the invented cotton gin, there was more land to be used for
cotton, and with more land comes more slaves. https://www.history.com/topics/inventions/eli-whitney-fast-facts-video
  • Louisiana Purchase Part 2

Later on this would create a disagreement about we weather or not these states would be free states or slave states. The two sections in this disagreement were the north and the south because weather or not these states become free or slave it would determine if the new state would be part of the north or south in the senate (north=free states, south= slave states). https://www.britannica.com/video/167171/Overview-Louisiana-Purchase
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Louisiana Purchase

The Louisiana purchase was a deal between France and the U.S. , where the U.S. bought about 827,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River for $15 million. The Louisiana Purchase had an impact on sectionalism and secession because this deal expanded the land west, and encouraged settlers to move westward to create new beginnings. Since there was more land west, there was more land to create new states.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise

The Missouri Compromise was a compromise made by Congress to admit Maine as a free state and Missouri as a slave state, as well as prohibited slaver north of the 36 30 line. This impacted sectionalism and secession because this compromise would anger both the north and the south because although they both got deals that helped/supported their side, they did not like what each side got for deals. The North was angry because the south got another slave state and the congress encouraged slavery.
  • Missouri Compromise Part 2

The South was angry because the north got another free state and essentially got the 36 30 line since no states north of it could be slave states. Both sections of the United States at this time were never satisfied with compromises and it would push the north and the south away from each other even more. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68gi3C0A9Fo
  • "Gag Rule"

    "Gag Rule"

The "Gag Rule" was a rule made so that nobody could bring up slavery in the House of the Representatives. This rule silenced the people and violated the First Amendment- Freedom of Speech. This rule impacted sectionalism and secession because it angered the North because they could not tell their view as to why slavery should be abolished. It angered the South because they could not tell their view of why the engagement in slavery should continue.
  • "Gag Rule" Part 2

Keeping the citizens silent will cause more conflict between the separate nations because the issue of slavery will never be addressed in the House of Representatives; therefore, they will have to address it on their own essentially with violence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NYzJhUAaM4
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850

The Compromise of 1850 consists of laws that were passed that favored both the North and the South. The laws that favored the North were California becoming a free state
and Washington D.C. stopping slave trade in the ares. The law that favored the South was the Fugitive Slave Act (slave owners can go and capture their runaway slaves).
  • Compromise of 1850 Part 2

This had an impact on sectionalism and secession because creating these compromises that favor both the North and the South will push them further apart because they got what they want, although they are never satisfied with what they got. The North was angry about the Fugitive Slave Act and the South was angry about California becoming a slave state and the capitol ending slave trade in that area. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNU5mzJ4FBU
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act

The Kansas-Nebraska Act was an act that Stephen Douglas was behind that would make Nebraska and Kansas a free state or slave state through popular sovereignty. Nebraska became a free state. Kansas was voted in as a slave state, but there was voter fraud. Kansas won the vote as a slave state with 240 percent of the popular vote. Since Kansas was next to slave state Missouri, thousands of white men from Missouri came over to vote for Kansas as a slave state. There was a re-vote.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act Part 2

Identification was needed to show that you were from Kansas, and after the re-vote Kansas was voted as a free state. This had an impact on sectionalism and secession because the re-vote would lead to the violent conflict between Missouri and Kansas, called "Bleeding Kansas." The conflict showed the unsettlement that the North and the South felt about states becoming free or slave. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYP854GAPAU
  • John Brown Scandal

    John Brown Scandal

John Brown was an abolitionist of slavery, and he dedicated his life to killing slave owners and freeing slaves.Brown felt justified in doing this because he saw himself as a god-like figure(martyr). He goes to Pottawatomie Creek in Kansas and to kill slave people, and kills five of them.He then flees the area to avoid getting caught. People of New England saw Brown as a hero for killing the slave people. He then goes to Harper's Ferry, Virginia and goes to the armory there to wait for slaves to
  • John Brown Scandal Part 2

come and take guns that he stole from the armory to kill more people. Brown is then captured and put on trial. After being declared guilty, he is hanged. This impacted sectionalism and secession because the North thought Brown was a hero, and the South thought he was evil for doing what he did and his sentence was appropriate. Because Brown was hanged, the North was angry causing more conflict between the North and the South.
