The beginning of Adeline Yen Mah's life
Adeline Yen Mah was born in the year of 1937. Adeline is a chinese americann girl. She grew up in Tianjin, China. Her birth mother had died when she was giving birth to Adeline. Adeline had been very heartbroken because she thought she was the one who killed her mother. She had 6 other siblings, 4 that were full blood related and 2 that were her step-mother's children. Adeline's father had remarried, and had 2 more kids, and were told to call her step-mother, Niang.(mother) -
Class Leader
On Adeline's first week of school she had lead her class for being so good in school. She had a medal to show it for severel weeks, the longest than anyone ever at her school. -
Foot Binding
Adeline had learned that she was thankful for being born when she was, because when her Nai Nai ( grandmother) was young she had to have her feet bound. When they bound your feet they take a tight bandage and rap it around one foot. They take the bandage and make it so your toes are pulled to your sole, making it so your feet were tiny for the rest of your life. Your feet never stop hurting from it and you would have a huge arch in your foot. -
Where did they go?
Father had went away and noone knew where he had went. Later Niang and Fourth Brother had left too. -
R.I.P Nai Nai
Nai Nai died of a massive strock. Adeline was very upset because Nai Nai was the only person in her family that she could talk to. -
Shanghi
We found out that Niang, Father, and Fourth Brother had been living in Shanghi, China. The rest of us moved with them. -
Lost in Shanghi
Adeline could tell no one was going to remeber to pick her up, so after a while she tried to walk home. She was walking along the road and after a while, she knew she would never find her home unless she called her father to come pick her up. She went inside a Chinese Resturaunt and was shy. When no one was looking she remembered the number to her home phone, so she picked up the phone and called her father to come pick her up. -
Map of Shanghi
On the day I called my father to come get me from the Chinese Restaurant, he gave me a map. It was a map of Shanghi and it was all mine. Father said if I ever want to go anywhere then to read the map and go there. -
Forgotten
On Adeline's first day to her new school in Shanghi, she had a lot of fun. When it came to someone taking her there and back, everyone had forgotten about her. After school she tried walking home but got lost and ended up at a Chinese Resturaunt. She remebered her house phone numberand had her father pick her up. He gave her a map so she can tell where she is when she wants to go somewhere. -
Family Reunion
During one of Adeline's family reunions, Little Sister wasn't behaving herself. Niang had told her to come to her and stop playing in the candy bowl. Little sister didn't listen and ripped of Niang's diamond necklace and broke it. Niang got so mad she slapped her across the cheek. Adeline stepped in and told her she shouldn't scold her like that and she shouldn't slap her. Niang then yelled at Adeline for disrespecting her and gave her a slap on the cheeck too. -
Chinese New Year with the Traitor
On New Years Eve Father and Niang gave all the children new clothes. The first five children had traditional clothes. The 2 youngest children got new style clothes that looked a lot better. The five oldest were upset and wanted to talk to their father alone, but had to write an anonamous letter so he would be away from Niang. Niang herd this from outside the door and after a while she took Big Sister and treated her like her full blood daughter and treated her perfectly. -
My new Best Friend
Whe Adeline was at school she had become best friends with a girl named Wu Chun-Mei. She was the most athletic girl in our school. -
Favorite Book
Wu Chun-Mei let Adeline read a lot of books because her parents are writers. There was one specific one that Adeline loved to read. It was called "A Little Princess." Adeline loved it because it related to her life and how she was treated and how she went from nothing to going to school fo her medical degree and being a writer. Adeline put the book under her pillow and dreamed about being somebody someday like the princess in the story. -
Best Brother
Third Brother wasn't mean to Adeline. He only acted mean to her because he went with what his older brothers were doing. Thirsd Brother and Adeline made a deal not to tell Big Sister any secret or talk to her that much. -
Winner!
Adeline's school submitted one of her compoositions to the Children's Writing Competion held by th Newspaper association and she won first place in her age group. -
Wu Chun-Mei's Birthday Party
Wu Chun-Mei was having a birthday party and they were having a holiday day at school and Adeline's parents didn't know it was a holiday day, so she pretended to be at school and came home too early for lunch. Niang knew something was up. Wu Chun-Mei called Adeline's house phone and was scolded for going to someones house and lieiing. When her father came home he whipped her with a dog whip for a while. -
Boarding School in Tainjian
Since Adeline lied to her parents about Wu Chun-Mei's birthday party, her parents sent her to a boarding school in Tainjin. Her parents didn't know the communists were coming and taking over the city and putting whoever lived there in jail. -
Everyone is Gone
Everyone at Adeline's boarding school had left, except for the teachers. Adeline's step Aunt, Aunt Reine, came to pick her up and take her to Hong Kong and see her family. -
Boarding School in Hong Kong
When Adeline's parents didn't want her in their Hong Kong home, they sent her to another boarding school in Hong Kong and she stayed in their orphanage. -
Bad start to summer
All of her friends went to visit their family's for summer and Adeline had no one to visit because her parents didn't want her. -
Sick and at home
Adeline was really sick and her dad came to pick her up at a hospital because she was so sick. -
Playwriting Competition and College
Adeline won the playwriting competition she dedicated to her YeYe. Her father came to pick her up and take her home again and tell her that she won. She was so excited and her father was so shocked. She finally asked her father if she could go to college in England with Third Brother. Her father said yes but she had to go to medical school. Finally she was happy.
