    A new constitution is signed into law that increases presidential powers and sperates church and state.
  • General Carlos Ibanez del Campo

    Ibanez gains power in Chili and establishes a dictatorship.
  • Communist Party banned

    Communism is banned in Chili towards the beginning of the Cold War and this ban lasts until September 4, 1958.
  • Ibanez regains control

    Carlos Ibanez is reelected with the promise to strengthen law and order (was ruler that established a dictatorship) and was president until 1958.
  • Salvador Allende elected president

    Salvador Allende is elected president and becomes South America's first democratically elected Marxist president. He wouls rule until his assassination in 1973.
  • Allende's assassination

    General Augusto Pinochet and the United State's CIA team up to kill Pinochet in an attempt to eliminate Marxism. Pinochet takes Allende's place and establishes a brutal dictatorship.
  • Pinochet steps down

    Augusto Pinochet steps down from position as head of state, bur remains commander-in-chief of the army. He is replaced by Christian Democrat Patricio Aylwin,
  • Eduardo Frei comes into power

    Frei becomes president and works towards reducing the military's power and influence in government.
  • Pinochet arrested

    Pinochet retires from the army, but is arrested in the United Kingdom on murder charges in Spain.
  • Pinochet returns to Chili

    Due to Pinochet's failing health, British Home Secretary Jack Straw decides that Pinochet is not well enough at the moment to go on trial.
