    The Monsters of the Midway

    From 1940-1947, QB Sid Luckman lead the Bears to 5 staright NFC Championship Games. Still and NFL record to this day, the Bears defeated the Washington Redskins 73-0 in the 1940s NFC Championship Game

    Late-Halas era

    After declining seasons in the 1950s, the Bears rebounded and won their eighth NFL Championship in 1963. Halas retired as coach in 1967 and worked in the front office. He was inducted as the first member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame class in 1963. He was later rewarded as President of the National Football Conference. After his death in 1983, the NFL named the NFC Championship trophy the George Halas Memorial Trophy.

    Struggles

    After the AFL-NFL merger, the Bears finished the 1970 season last in the NFC North making it 2 years in a row. In 1975, they drafted Walter Payton from Jackson State University who went on to break the teams rushing yards record

    Former tight end Mark Ditka, was hired by Halas to coach the team in 1982. In 1985, the Bears went on to win their ninth Super Bowl Championship, their first since the AFL-NFL merger

    Lovie Smith era

    Hired by the Bears in 2004, Smith brought the successful "Tampa 2" defense strategy with him to Chicago and in 2006 earned a trip to Super Bowl XLI but came up short and lost 29-17 to the Indianapolis Colts. In 2009, the Bears made the biggest trade in franchise history by aquiring QB Jay Cutler from the Denver Broncos in exchange for QB Kyle Orton. In 2012-13 season the Bears missed the playoffs during a 3-5 stretch after starting 7-1 which later led to Smith being fired.

    Former CFL coach Marc Trestman made his head coaching debut against the Cincinnati Bengals and won by a score of 24-21 making him the fourth coach in team history to win in his coaching debut
