The next stage was to disable the emergency cooling system. Engineers noticed that the reactor was gradually slowing. The power levels rose, which started the water pump, causing the water around the reactor to be drained. Without water the reactor began to overheat. There was a huge surge in power, rods were lowered and a large explosion occured.

Engineer Cliff Robinson arrived at the Nuclear Power Plant and heard the radiation detecor going off. After checking the detector, he was stunned and said, "My first thought was that a war had broken out and somebody had blown up a nuclear bomb." He actually deteced a radioactive cloud from Chernobyl 800 miles away. A reactor of Chernobyl had exploded, throwing radioactive dust and junk everywhere. The event killed 31 people.
  • Evacuation

ChernobylChernobylThe evacuation began at 14:00 on 27 April. In order to expedite the evacuation, the residents were told to bring only what was necessary, as the authorities had said it would only last approximately three days. As a result, most of the residents left their personal belongings, which are still there today. An exclusion zone of 30 km (19 mi) remains in place today, although its shape has changed and its size has been expanded.

In 2011, Ukraine opened the Chernobyl area for tours. Just 25 years ago the area was filled with radioactivity and horror-like images, but now it is ready for tourists who want to see and learn more. Anually 6,000 tourists will attend guided tours of the ghost-like town. All tour reservations are to be made 11 days in advance for the 4 hour tour that opens eyes to many radioactive sites.
