A test was scheduled for this day to test if a turbine could supply power to the cooling system in case of an emergency. A controller of an electricity grid requested that the plant stayed operational so that it could supply power to the grid, so the plant could not perform the scheduled shut down and the test was delayed till the next day.

All though the plant was below the minimum operation level and did not have as many control rods in the core as they were supposed to, the test to see if a turbine could supply power to the cooling systems was started. The reactor was becoming unstable so the operator pressed an emergency button that dropped control rods into the core, but they didn’t help stabilize the core. The reactor was destroyed and explosions started happening around the plant that killed two people.

What Happened To The Nuclear Power Plant?

WikipediaFollowing the accident, questions arose about the future of the plant and its eventual fate. All work on the unfinished reactors 5 and 6 was halted three years later. However, the trouble at the Chernobyl plant did not end with the disaster in reactor 4. The damaged reactor was sealed off and 200 cubic meters of concrete was placed between the disaster site and the operational buildings.
  • Putting out the fire

    Putting out the fire
Workers were pumping water into the core to try and put out the fire, but this was stopped to prevent other units in the plant from flooding. Since they still needed to stop the fire, they got helicopters to drop a mixture of boron, dolomite, sand, clay, and lead into the core in hopes that they could bury the core and stop the fire.
