Charles Darwin: February 12, 1809- April 19, 1882

  • Natural Selection Theory

Charles Darwin is best known for his thoughts and studies of evolution and natural selection. In 1831 he took a voyage on the HMS Beagle in which he participated in a survey expedition spanning from South America, Australia, and South Africa. During this expedition Darwin would study and catalog plants and animals he observed. During each of his stops on his voyage he observed the animal and plant life in the area.

  • Natural Selection Theory

Through his observations he began to notice that similar species had different physical characteristics depending on their environment. The most familiar study of Darwin is the finches he came across when he was in the Galapagos Islands. He sketched the different finches he observed noticing that the species of finches that ate large seed had tough land larger beaks, than the finches who ate insects; their beaks were thin and sharp.
  • Natural Selection Theory

It wasn't until Darwin returned from his voyage and reviewed his finding that he was noticed changes in the finches based on their environment. Darwin proposed the idea that a species is capable of adapting to its environment to survive, and those new adaptations are passed genetically from generation to generation. His idea about evolution did not just stop there; there had to be a catalyst that would cause evolution to occur in a species
  • Natural Selection Theory

Darwin names the catalyst natural selection. Natural selection theory explains how a population of a species can undergo evolution to better suit their environment. The three key points in his theory are: 1. traits in inherited from parent to offspring. The traits that enable them to survive are continually passed down.
    2. Those traits will become more common as more offspring survive and reproduce
    3. Over generations the population would fully adapt to environment ensuring survival
