  • First School in America opens in 1635

    The first school was established in 1635, it was known as the Boston Latin School
  • Public Schools struggle to take hold

    During this time period public schools did not get much attention. Most schools charged tuition and often only were there for specific groups of people. Mostly for the male kids of wealthy white families.

    There are many competing stories about when the chalkboard actually first came to the United States, but it is known that by 1809 it was heavily prevalent in city schools such as Boston and New York
  • Kids in public school

    By the end of the 1830's, roughly over half of American children ages 5-14 were in public schools
  • Horace Mann

    Hoarace Mann , a legislator from Massachusetts begins to advocate for "common schools"
  • Spread of Public schools

    Public School as an idea begin to take hold in America

    Cities, with more resources to help fund the schools, showed more increases in public school numbers than that of rural towns and communities.
