  • The Yalta Conference

    The Yalta Conference
    This is where Roosevelt met with Stalin and Churchill at Yalta to work out the future of Germany and Poland. They agreed on the division of Germany into American, British, French, and Soviet occupation zones. The Yalta meeting stalled until Stalin agreed on elections to let Poles choose their government, using the Communist-dominated regime as a framework. However, disputes about Poland were not over; they would continue to strain American-Soviet relations for years to come.

    •	The establishment of the United Nations in San Francisco
    The United Nations was a new international peacekeeping organization. Delegates form 50 nations met in San Franciso to adopt a statement of principles they would go by. These included trying to settle their differences peacefully and would promote justice and cooperation in solving international problems. In addition, they would try to stop wars from starting and take effective collective measures to end those that did break out. Of these 50 nations, 11 countires sat on a Security Council.

    The Postdam Conference
    At this conference, the United States and the Soviet Union continued their depate that had taken place at the Yalta Conference; the future of Germany and Poland. At Postdam, Truman got word that the atom bomb had been tested in New Mexico and wanted to intimidate Stalin with this news. HOwever, the Soviet had spies in America so Stalin already knew about the bomb was not surprised by what Truman told him. He simple told him to to put it to good use.

    •	The Army-McCarthy Hearings
    Joseph McCarthy was part of the Senate and wanted to distinquish himself by blaming 205 American people of being Communist. The McCarthy hearings was putting McCarthy on hearing on live television sp expose him for his bullying tactics and baseless allegations. By the end of these hearings, McCarthy had lost most of his supporters and all his power was gone.

    The launch of Sputnik
    Sputnik is known as the first atrificial satillite to be lunched into space. This was done by the Soviets in 1957. Sputnik could also carry the hydrogen bomb. This caused a lot of fear for many Americans.

  • The U-2 Incident

    The U-2 Incident
    The U-2 incident is when the Soviets used a missile to shoot down an American U-2 spy plane that was flying over Soviet terrotory. This was a demostration of the Soviets using their arms capabilities on the Americans. This event shattered the confidence of many Americans.
