Chapter 18 Timeline

  • Yalta Conference

    This took place in Russia when Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin talked about the future of the war and postwar. They mostly talked about Soviet involvment in the Pacific.
  • Potsdam Conference

    Stalin, Churchill, and Truman meet up in Germany to discuss post war plans for Europe. It was diffictult to agree due to lack of common enemies.
  • First Atomic Bomb Dropped on Japan

    President Harry Truman called for an atomic strike on Japan to avoid war on their streets, killing more people for both countries. This first if two attacks was on Hiroshima
  • V-J Day

    This is the day Japan surrendered to the US and everyone celebrated in the big cities. With Japan's surrender, WWII had finially ended.
  • "Iron Curtain Speech"

    Winston Churchill's speech in a small Missouri town changed the way the Democratic West viewed the Communist East.
  • Truman Doctorine Announced

    The Truman Doctorine is seen to be the official declaration of the Cold War. In his adress, President Tuman, in short, said nations will have a choice to make in their futures; a government made by majority or minority. (democracy or communism)
  • Marshall Plan Announced

    Secrety of State George C. Marshall announced, while at Harvard University, a plan to aid European nations hurt by WWII. Admission of President Truman believed the plan would help prevent the idea of communism to spread.
  • Berlin Airlift Begins

    Starting this day, the US began making aid runs to the west of Berlin. Over 200,000 planes landed in West Berlin and provided for over 2 million citizens.
  • NATO Treaty Ratified

    NATO was a pact signed by 11 nations and the US made to stop any Soviet aggresion in Western Europe. It also stood as the main cause of alliance against the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
  • End of Berlin Blockade

    The planned end of the Berlin Blockade was brought to an end because it was simply not providing anything for the Soviets. The airlifts by the US overwhelmed them and took their power from them.
  • Soviets Explode Atomic Bomb

    Code named "First Lightning", the Soviets created a mock town complete with animals in cages, and tsted their first successful A-bomb. Klaus Fuchs helped the US with their first bomb, but was found guilty for passing such imformation to the Soviets.
  • Beginning of McCarthyism

    McCarthy had a spech in Virginia in which he claimed to know 205 communists working for the US government. This started an era of a scared people accusing and paranioa.
  • Julius and Ethel Rosenburg Exicuted

    This married couple ended a large controversial espionage case in the Cold War. They were accused of leaking information to the Soviets about the atomic bombs.
  • Warsaw Pact

    A Soviet made pact to help each other when another is in need was signed by 12 differnt nations in respone to the US with NATO being asked about to West Germany.
  • Geneva Summit

    Leades of the US, France, Britian, and the Soviet Union came together to disscuss ending the Cold War. Although no agreemnents were made, the meeting helped to settle the tension.
  • Hungarian Uprising

  • Suez War

    Israeli troops pushed into Egypt near Suez Canal. British and French troops come for aid, almost pulling the Soviet Union int the conflict, but not.
  • Launching of Sputnik

    The Soviet Union launches mans first artificial satallite. The worlds "Space Age" begins.
  • US U-2 Plane Shot Down

    US spy plane is shot out of the ir over Soviet air space. It caused much embarassment for the US and hurt the relations they had with the Soviet Union.
