Chapter 13

  • Morse Code

Samuel Morse devised a code made of short and long electrical impulses that represented letters of the alphabet. by 1900, more than 63 million messages were sent annually. This event is important because it created a new way of communication.
  • New Forms of Energy

Scientists invented new ways of using petroleum & fuels to help power new machines.
This even is important becuase electricity led to many important andvances in industrial development, changing peoples lives.
  • The Bessemer Process

Henry Bessemer created a way to convert iron into steel that was cheaper and easier and produced good steel. This is important because steel is lighter, stronger, and more flexible than iron. The creaton of the process also helped create mass production of steel.
  • Drake Strikes Oil

after striking oil in 1859, it a major industrusry.
this event is important becuase before drilling for oil people would get oil by melting fat from whales or wait for it to seep up from the ground. Both time consuming and expensive. Drilling for oil was cheaper and more efficient.
  • The Transcontinental Railroad

When federal government stepped in and helped to fund the completion of the transcontinental railroad that would extend from one side of the nation to the end.
this event is important because it helped the economic infrastructure.
  • Social Darwinism

The idea that society should interfere with competition as little as possible, and opposed government intervention to protect workers.Social Darwinism believed that society, as a hole would benefit from the success of the fit and weeding out the unfit.
this is important because it infulenced buiness industries and the countries as a whole.
  • The Telephone

Alexander Graham Bell created the first 'talking telegram' on March 7, 1876. later creating a company with buiness partners to build long distance telephone lines. and by 1900, 1.5 million telephones were being used. important event because it created an even better form of communication.
  • Edison, a Master of Invention

Edison made electric power more available.
came invented the lightbulb. by 1882, Edison had built power plants to help light buildings in New York. And by 1890 Edison had power stations built across the country
this is important becuase Edison helped make electricity more available.
  • Railroads and Timezones

the times were different depending on what place you were at. this caused confusion with train schedules as the timings were different in each place. So time zones were created. This event is important because it helped improve scheduling, linked businesses with customers, and helped cut the price of shipping down.
  • Electricity is Imporved

Westinghouse invented alternating currents that could be generated more cheaply. Using transformers that enabled currents to travel longer and reduce power levels, his system became more practical than Edison's system. This event is important because both Westinghouse and Edison's ideas created two different companies that encouraged and spread the use of electricity throughout the country.
By 1898, electricity was used to light over two million light bulbs.
