  • First Day of our Hero's Journey

First Day of our Hero's Journey
Today I watched the story of the Subway hero and the bravery he exhibited. In class we began to discuss what our thoughts of heroes were and were told to write down our definition of what a hero meant to us. I wrote down that a hero was someone who takes a risk to help others. We were then given a brief introduction of the project we would be doing concerning heroes.
  • Why Courage Matters

    Why Courage Matters
Today I learned what it meant to have courage through the daring actions of Roy Benavidez and the hardships faced by John McCain. Roy Benavidez saved the lifes of his fellow comrades while under constatnt fire of the enemy. John McCain, as a prisoner of war, endured countless torture sessions for five and a half years before his release. Benavidez and McCain's unbelievable accomplishments and outstanding bravery make them heroes.

Interview with Kristi Quillen: Peace Corps volunteer
Today I watched Mrs.Allen and Mrs.Simmon's interview with Kristi Quillen, a Peace Corps volunteer. She talked about her decision on joining and the steps she took to get where she is now. By watching this, I got a better understanding of how an interview is conducted and a rough idea of how my own interview with my hero will be like.
  • Thinking About A Hero

    Thinking About A Hero
On this day, I thought about who I wanted as my hero. Not knowing where to begin looking, I decided to take a look at Brad Meltzer’s book, Heroes for My Son. In this book, I found a list of wonderful candidates such as Nelson Mandela, Jonas Salk, Abraham Lincoln, etc. However, one candidate stood out to me the most. Norman Borlaug. After reading about how this one man saved millions of people from starvation, I knew he was the one.
  • Finding my Book

    Finding my Book
Today I went to the library to a biography on our hero. I searched the databases and roamed the bookshelves but I could not find a single book about my hero. This puzzled me greatly. I asked myself, "How could a Noble Peace Prize winner who saved over a billion people from starvation not be recognized by anybody?” Surprisingly, the more hopeless my search for a book became, the more determined I was to research about this amazing man who changed the lives of so many.
  • Found my Book!

    Found my Book!
After searching all over the place, I finally found my biography online! I ordered the book and the estimate time of arrival was 2 days. Hooray! The book i chose is called "The Man Who Fed the World: Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Norman Borlaug and His Battle to End World Hunger" by Leon Hesser.
  • "Change the World" Powerpoints

    "Change the World" Powerpoints
In class, I watched the "Year of the Rat" which taught me that even one simple act of kindness can go a long way. I also watched Hugh Laurie's performance of "All We Gotta Do" and another video called, "Waiting on the World to Change." These videos taught me that although everybody has the capability of being a hero, not many people are willing to act. I realized that the initiative to take action and risks is what sets heroes apart from normal people.
  • First Blog: How I Chose My Subject

First Blog: How I Chose My Subject
Today I turned in my first blog on Posterous. Our objective was to talk about how we chose our hero and the reasons behind our choosings. I talked about how I chose my hero because he was unique in that not many people knew about him.
  • Heroes in Literature

    Heroes in Literature
Today our class discussed about heroes in literature and also created a list of books to brainstorm for our second blog post. Some books mentioned were, "To Kill a Mockingbird, "Tale of Two Cities", "Les Miserables", etc. Through these heroes of literature, I realized that heroic deeds can be expressed in many ways and that heroes come in all different forms.
  • Halfway Through my Book!

    Halfway Through my Book!
I'm about halfway through my book. I find the accomplishments and early childhood of my hero to be really interesting. As I read about his story, I find supporting evidence of my claim that Norman Borlaug fits many of the requirements of being a hero.
  • Sharing my Story

    Sharing my Story
Today in class i shared a passage of my biography that I found to be the most interesting to my fellow classmates and teacher. It was interesting hearing about other people's stories too.
  • Setting up my Interview

    Setting up my Interview
