Causes of the Civil War timeline

  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri would gradually abolish slavery. This prevented any additional slaves from entering Missouri and emancipated all slave children born in Missouri. This created a free state and eventually outlawed slavery.

    President Polk declares a state of war between Mexico and the United States after Mexican troops had allegedly attacked US troops at the border

    Mexican-American War

  • Wilmot Proviso

    Stated that land taken from Mexico form the Mexican-American War would not be eligable to hold slaves. Although this was rejected by the mostly Southern Senate, it showed the North's clear intentions to limit the South and South's determination to fight them.
  • Fugative Slave Act

    Allowed northern law enforcement and bounter Hunters to foricbly capture escaped slaves and bring them back to the south.
  • Dred Scott Case Resolution and Results

    Meeting in which slave owners could take their slaves into the North without losing claim for an alloted period of time
  • Harpers Ferry

    Attack on an armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia
  • Election of Abraham Lincoln

    Lincoln pledged to outlaw slavery. This lead to South Carolina voting themselves out of the U.S. This created more separation.
  • "Ultimate Extinction"

    Speech where Lincoln vows to end slavery and lead it to its ultimate extinction.
  • Fort Sumter

    Confederate attack on the Union fort, Fort Sumter, in South Carolina.
  • Lincoln rejected Ultimatums

    He had rejected the ultimatums of some of the states, which caused Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina to join the Confederacy. This had begun the era of the Civil War.
