  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Nat Turner's Rebellion
    A slave, Nat Turner started up a rebellion in southern Virginia. Nat and 70 slaves killed 60 whites. Their rebellion was shut down after two days. This caused mass fear and militias assembled, 56 slaves accused of being part of the rebellion were executed. Another 120 slaves and free blacks were murdered by the militias around the area.

    The Burning of the Pennsylvania Hall
    The Pennsylvania Hall was an abolitionist building. It was supposed to be a place where ideas of antislavery and women's rights could be talked about. However days after its opening it was burned down by an anti-abolitionist mob.

    Mexican American War

    The war started because the US annexed Texas into the Union. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The newly acquired territory from winning the Mexican American War brought more tensions to the United States. There was an argument about whether slavery should be allowed in the new states.
  • Harriet Tubman Escaping

    Harriet Tubman Escaping
    Harriet Tubman escaped to the North, over the next 8 years she went back south to free more slaves. She used the Underground Railroad to free over 300 slaves.

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitive Slave Act was passed, this required slaves to be returned to their owners even if they were in a free state. Also the federal government was now responsible for finding, returning, and trying escaped slaves.

    Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas was a time of violence during the settling of Kansas. The Kansas-Nebraska allowed settlers to determine whether the state was free or a slave state. This caused pro and anti-slavery settlers to go to Kansas to influence the decision, this lead to violence.

    Dred Scott Case
    In April 1846 Dred Scott filed lawsuits for his freedom. He claimed since his owner moved to a free state he had become a free man. But on March 6 1857 lost the case and was not granted his freedom.

    Harper's Ferry Raid

    John Brown attempted to start a slave revolt in the South by taking over the United States arsenal at Harper's Ferry in Virginia. He was defeated by US Marines. John Brown was captured and executed for treason and murder.
  • South Carolina Secedes

    South Carolina Secedes
    South Carolina became the first state to secede. They said that non-slaveholding states had become hostile towards the institution of slavery. And Nothern states had "failed their constitutional obligations" by obstructing the recovery of fugitive slaves back to bondage.
  • The Battle of Fort Sumter

    The Battle of Fort Sumter
    Abraham Lincoln announced he wanted to resupply Fort Sumter and Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard bombarded the fort for 34 hours with artillery. The fort was surrendered on April 13. This is considered the first battle that marked the start of the Civil War
