Causes of the Civil War

  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise lead to the Civil War because it upset the Northerners that state was still legal under the 36, 30 latitude line. The Northern states wanted slavery completely abolished, but Congress had to comprommise between both states.
  • Free Soil Party

    Free Soil Party
    The Free Soil Party opposed the expansion of slavery into western territories. The people of this party came from the Whig party and tried to make their opinon and position known on slavery
  • Compromise of 1850

    This compromise made California a state into the Union, which arose controversy because it broke the "slavery line" and was a free state.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitive Slave Act was a law that greatly angered the people of the North. The law stated that if any runaway slaves were found, that they MUST be returned to their owners, and sometimes harsh punishments could be inflicted. The people of the North usually did not abide by this law.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a fictional novel that depicted the life of a slave in the south. It was a very detailed and harsh story, showing the mistreatment of slaves in the south. People in the North were outraged; but people in the south claimed the accusations to not be true
  • Repeal of Missouri Compromise

    This repeal of the previously made Missouri Compromise caused tensions in the north to rise because it still allowed slavery in the south.
  • Republican Party

    Republican Party
    This new party was formed by anti-slavery Whigs. This caused controversy between aint-slavery and pro-slavery people because the anti-slavery people were becoming more blatantly outspoken.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    This act mandated whether ot not slavery would be permitted in a certain state. It tried to calm tensions, but instead split two political parties and worsened tensions between the North and South,
  • Election of 1860

    Abraham Lincoln was elected president. He wanted slavery abolished so this caused the south to not be for him, and they were very angry with his election, but the North was in favor.
  • South Carolina's Succession

    South Carolina, being for slavery, was fed up with everything happpening in America. They were the first state to succeed(leave, draw out) of the Union and they were followed by six other states, this event led to the Civil War
