  • French/ Indian War / Seven Years War 1754-1763

    French/ Indian War / Seven Years War 1754-1763
    Britain vs.France for control of North American. Native tribes allied with the French. French forces established Fort Duquense what the British considered their territory. George Washington's Virginia forces were sent to force the French out. Conflict arose and the French won at first. Britain went in debt providing for the war.
    1759 - Quebec - France gave much of their land to North America - Treaty Of Paris.
    King George III charged taxes to get out of debt, this led to the Revolutionary War
  • The Stamp Act - 1765

    The Stamp Act - 1765
    The Stamp Act was used to recover the debt of the French and Indian war. The act required the paper parchment for all legal documents; newspapers, journals, ect.
    The act was immediately opposed. Taxation without representation led the colonies to revolt.
  • Townshend Acts 1767

    Townshend Acts 1767
    Townshend comes into power and tries to balance the budget, so he taxes Britain and the colonies.
    Townshend Acts: He placed costom duties on items imported from Britain like glass, paper, tea, and paint.
    He stated that the money would go toward the administration of the colonies and not Britain. At first the colonists did not argue against the acts. Then John Dickenson sparked anger. Parliament decided to repeal most of the acts but kept the tea act for revenue and to show the power to tax,
  • The Boston Massacre 1770

    The Boston Massacre 1770
    The Bostonians vs. the Redcoats. The Redcoats called the Bostonians, Yankees, as an insult. They would trash talk each other in the streets. A fight broke out outside of a tavern in Boston between two men. Then six more men showed up to fight. Then it turned into an angry mob in the city. Bullets cut through the mob with 4 Bostonians dead and 6 wounded. Sam Adams said that the British should be convicted for murder. His brother John Adams opposed this and said it was self defense - not guilty.
  • The Tea Act

    The Tea Act
    Act that gave a monopoly on tea sales to the East India Company. In other words, American colonists could buy no tea unless it came from that company. The Tea Act lowered the price on this East India tea so much that it was way below tea from other suppliers. But the American colonists saw this law as yet another means of "taxation without representation" because it meant that they couldn't buy tea from anyone else. Tea arrived from England and the colonists demanded it to be set back.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    Parliament tries to impose its authority by placing new taxes and laws, which usually get shut down except one, The Tea Act. It is a three penny tax per lb of team. Feathers and coal were used to disguise the men and they grabbed hatchets. 5000 watched as they climbed the tea filled merchant ship from England. Brits were gone from the massacre. 342 crates of tea worth 10,000 British pounds were dumped into the ocean. This sabotage pushed the war.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    The Intolerable Acts were the American Patriots' term for a series of punitive laws passed by the British Parliament in 1774 after the Boston Tea party. They were meant to punish the Massachusetts colonists for their defiance in throwing a large tea shipment into Boston harbor.
  • 1st and 2nd Continental Congres

    1st and 2nd Continental Congres
    On September 5, 1774, delegates from each of the 13 colonies except for Georgia (which was fighting a Native-American uprising and was dependent on the British for military supplies) met in Philadelphia as the First Continental Congress to organize colonial resistance to Parliament's Coercive Acts.
  • Lexington and Concord 1775

    "The shot heard round the world"
    Paul Revere spread the word that the British are going to attack. The British told the Americans to disperse, they did so and then someone fired a shot. No one knows which side fired the first shot. They fired back. Men died, and the Americans ran off. The British continued into Concord and they were faced with a rebelling population. 269 British soldiers were killed or wounded. This fight initiated The Revolution. After blood was shed, there was no turning back.
  • Common Sense by Thomas Paine

    Common Sense by Thomas Paine
    Inspired by the colonies to fight for their independence.
    Paine makes harsh views of England itself.
    He hides his name from publication. Colonies needed independence not improved representation from the British government. He thought that the idea of a king as a leader was ridiculous and that the leader should be chosen by the people for the people and not hereditary.
    The book consisted:
    Elections are the right thing for governments
    Hereditary kings are bad.
    Independence is future
    Colonies grow
