Treaty of Paris
The Treaty of Paris in 1763 officially ended the French and Indian War. The French lost all possessions of land in North America to Great Britain. Spain got all French lands West of the Mississippi River, New Orleans, but lost Florida to England. England got all French lands in Canada. The Great Lakes country the Ohio River Valley and Florida. -
The French and Indian War
The French and Indian War was fought between the British and France for control of North America in 1754 to 1763. The British won the war and France lost all of its colonies North. -
Proclimation of 1763
This prohibited settlement beyond the Appalachian Mountains. While Britain did not intend to harm the colonists, many colonists took offense at this order. -
Sugar Act
Parliament passed the Sugar and Molasses Act. The revenue was raised and merchant was required to pay taxes. -
Committees of Correspondence
Organized by Samuel Adams, these helped spread propaganda and information through letters. -
Stamp Act
The Stamp Act was passed by the British Parliament, new taxes were put on to the American colonist. They had to pay for every piece of paper they used. The money gained was used to protect the American fronteir. -
Quartering Act
British Parliament passed the Quartering Acts. This act forced American colonists to house and feed British forces who were serving in North America. -
Townshend Act
Charles Townshend passed the English Parliament after the Stamp Act. Revenue was collected from colonist putting custom duties on imports of glass,lead,paints,paper, and tea. -
Boston Massacre
The British Army soldiers killed five colonists in Boston and injured six. The colonist started a mob against the British officers throwing snowballs and stones at them and in response the British fired shots. -
Tea Act
Great Britains Parliament passed the Tea Act. This act launches the final spark of Revolution in Boston. The Tea Act was to reduce the massive surplus of tea not raise taxes. -
Boston Tea Party
Massachusetts colonist dressed as the Natives and seized 342 chests of tea. They then took the tea to the harbor and dumped it there. The colonist were protesting the importing of tea in East India Company. -
Intolerable Act
This act was the Patriots name for the Coercive Acts, passed by the British Parliament. King George III placed this as a punishment for the dumping of tea in the harbor (to control the colonies). -
First Continental Congress
In response to the Intolerable Acts, 12 of the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia from September-October, 1774. One of the main results of this was the creation of The Association calling for a boycott of British goods. -
Battle of Lexington and Concord
This battle was the first military engagments of American Revolution. It was between the kingdom of Great Britain and thirteen colonies. The colonies didnt want to fight but when the first fire was shot war began. The 13 colonies defeated the British and took over their land. -
Olive Branch Petition
The Olive Branch Petition, which was adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 5 and submitted to King George on July 8, 1775. It was an attempt to assert the rights of the colonists while maintaining their loyalty to the British crown. King George refused to read the petition and on August 23 proclaimed that the colonists had "proceeded to open and avowed rebellion."
