Causes of American Revolution Illustrated Timeline

  • French/Indian War

    French/Indian War
    Was a war between France and Great Britain, this was because of expanding colonies bumping into each other, and disputes over who owns the piece of land. Though the French were out-numbered, they sought the Native Americans for help.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The stamp Act was a tax that was on all the printed documents, which inluded newspapers, playing cards, Etc. This directly affected the colonies, instead of indirectly ( taxes on imports and such), leading to much discontent throughout the colony.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    This Act is named after the leading government minister, Charles Townshend, and this act imposed a tax on anything that was imported from Great Britain, In addition to the imports, there was also a tax on tea, which angered the colonists.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    On the morning of March 5, 1770, a mob gathered in front of the Boston Customs House, taunting the guards; as a result the guards shot into the crowd, killing 5 colonists.
  • Boston Tea Party

    This event was caused by the passing the Tea Act, which allowed the East India Company to sell Tea directly to the colonies without paying a tax. This have turned out to anger the colonies, and as a result on December 16, 1773 , the colonists disguised themselves as Native Americans, and dumped the anchored tea ships' supplies of tea into the ocean.

    The intolerable Acts were a set of laws that were in response to the Boston tea party event, these inluded the closing of the boston harbor, and Quartering troops( which allowed British Commanders to house british troops in any building they wanted without reason).
  • 1st Continental Congress

    1st Continental Congress
    56 delegates met in philedelphia, where they drew up the Declaration of Colonial Rights, in which they defended thier rights to run thier own affairs, away from British rule. It also stated that if Britain had used force against the colonies, that the colonies would fight back.
  • Lexington and Concord

    Lexington and Concord
    The night before the battle, Paul Revere, William Dawes, and Samuel Prescott, rode out to warn of a british army of 700 troops headed for Concord. Knowing this 70 minutemen lined up on the shore, 8 were killed when they refused to lay down thier weapons. The army continued to only find that thier weapon supply crate was empty, they headed back to the shore where they were ambushed by 4000 minutemen, the army was crushed.
  • 2nd Continental Congress

    2nd Continental Congress
    Here at this meeting, there were many endless debates, some of those called for independence from Britain, others called for reconciliation with Britain. But both sides came to agreement to recognize the colonial Malitia as the Continental Army, and had also appointed George Washington as its commander.
