Causes of the American Revolution

  • The End of the French and Indian War

The French and Indian War, also known as the Seven Years' War, between the British and American colonies against the French ended in February 1763 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris(1763).
  • Proclamation of 1763

The Proclamation line of 1763 was put in place by the British to mark a boundary in the Appalachian Mountains. The Proclamation line made sure that the colonists couldn't move into the land that they got from defeating the French.
  • Sugar Act

This act lowered the duty on foreign molasses. It assigned customs officers and had courts to collect said duties. The main purpose of this act was to prosecute smugglers.
  • Stamp Act

This act made it so that the colonist would need to buy a stamp for every paper they have bought.
  • Quartering Act

This act would force colonists to provide the necessities to the British Troops. Be it having supplies or a roof over their heads, they must abide by this act.
  • Boston Massacre

A protest that got violent in Boston forced British soldiers to shoot and kill several people. This was known as the Boston Massacre.
  • Tea Act

The Tea Act was a law that gave the company the right to directly transport tea to the colonies without having to go to England first. Commission agents would also have the sole right to sell tea in the colonies.
  • Boston Tea Party

A tea boycott would worsen the financial problems for the British east India company. Boston Patriots would disguise as Indians and board three British ships with tea, and dump the tea into the harbor.
  • Intolerable Acts

A set of facts laid out to punish the colonists for their actions during the Boston Tea Party. This act would close ports, force colonists to house British troops. And allowed British Officers to be tried in Britain for crimes committed in colonies, instead of the colonist.
  • Battle at Lexington and Concord

The battle of Lexington and Concord was the first battle of the American War of Independence, famously known for 'the shot heard round the world'. The British won the fight at Lexington but minutemen won the fight at Concord. The British learned that the Americans were ready to fight and die for their independence.
