    First official celebration
    The first celebration was done by immigrants from the Portuguese islands. The initial idea was basically everyone would get soaked wet. People walked onto streets and would carry buckets of water to pour on people no matter who they are. It was first called the entrudo which means entrance.

    The Carnaval of Brazil is a wonderful annual celebration. It starts a few days before lent. It shows true culture from the country of Brazil. It includes food, dancing, alcohol, and music. It has been celebrated nearly every year and shows beautiful talent from all the samba school.

  • Tia Ciata

    Tia Ciata
    Tia Ciata was born in 1854 in Bahia. She was known as the birther of samba. At that time, playing the drums was associated with black magic and cults, so she would have the instrumentalists play behind her house to the police wouldn't suspect a thing. Ciata would then have guests over and would dance for them.

  • Cordão Carnavalesco

    Cordão Carnavalesco
    In 1980 the idea of Cordão Carnavalesco was introduced. It was basically the idea of people dressing up as different things like queens, kings witches and dancers. This was the first time people would go to the parade as a specific role. In the same year they were introduced to cordões de velhos. they would wear masks and would walk around like an old man.

  • Cucumbys

    Cucumbys
    In the 1980's the maxixe was a very popular dance that had submerged from the lundu. A group of black went on the streets, before the festival, and would play the cucumbys which was the congo. The cucumbys later became a part of the Carnaval when slavery was abolish in 1888. Later the cucumbys was mixed with the maxixe which led to the samba. It is the most popular and cultural dance in Brazil.

  • Samba Schools

    Samba Schools
    The first samba schools were established because of the samba players Estácio. This group also created the most traditional samba school Deixa Falar, Let Me Speak in English. From this, Ismael Silva came up with the idea of blocos de Carnaval which were groups of samba dancers that would move the to rhythm of samba.

  • All Hail King Momo

    All Hail King Momo
    King Momo is born!! In 1933, the mayor of Rio started the festivities by handing a huge silver key to King Momo. He becomes an important role for the Carnaval. He opens the carnval and other festivities within the carnaval. He is responsible for the Carnaval to have a fun vibe. He makes sure the parade is hype throughout. This became a tradition in all carnavals. They all must have a King Momo also known as, Fat King.

  • Carnaval stops

    In 1939 World War II starts and the city of Rio decided to stop the parade until everything was okay. They did not resume the festivity until 1939, two years after the war had ended.

    LGBT
    The São Paulo Carnaval is the most LGBTQ+ friendly parade. In 2017 they had the Sexual Diversity Museum of São Paulo give a speech at their parade. In 2020 they had the first transgender woman lead a samba school in any Carnival event ever.
