    Igor Sergeyevich Gouzenko was a cipher clerk for the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa. In 1945 Igor left the embassy carrying a large number of documents that revealed information that showed a network of spies. He tried to defect them and hand them into the Canadian authorities but nobody took him seriously.

    In 1945, the Allies decided to split Germany into four zones of occupation. Britain, France and America united their zones into a new country, West Germany. They introduced a new currency, which they said would help trade. Stalin cut off all rail and road links to West Berlin - the Berlin Blockade. The west saw this as an attempt to starve Berlin into surrender, so they decided to supply West Berlin by air. The Berlin Blockade lasted 318 days.

    The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is a United States and Canadian organization that detects anything in space that in coming over to towards North America. They detect it by using the DEW (Distant Early Warning) line which has radar stations that cover the border of north America.

    The Soviet Union launched a satellite called sputnik. The US thought they were the leader in space technology so when the soviets were the first to send something into space they got jealous. This started a space race and this led up to Apollo and the landing on the moon, which eventually ended the Sputnik crisis

    The Soviet Union was desperately behind the United States in the arms race. Their missiles couldn’t go as far as the U.S. missiles could. So the Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev asked Cuba if they could put missiles on their island to scare the U.S. as the missiles were coming over seas, President John F. Kennedy told them that if they pass a border to Cuba they will fire missiles at them so they turned around and left.

    Soviet teams had totally dominated international hockey for the previous 10 years. Then for the first time they played the Canadians in an 8 game series. They played until the 8th game and Canada scored with 34 seconds left to win.

There was an huge celebration along the Berlin Wall, with people hugging, kissing, singing, cheering, and crying.
