    For the first time atomic bombs are dropped in Japan creating enormous chaos with multiple deaths and resulting in Japan's surrender. Canada's effort in D-Day in the year befpre helped lead up to this event.

    Due to the Soviet agression and the Berlin blockade, the Western allies decided to form NATO to prevent Soviet expansion in European countries. They established a stronger military presence in Europe. Canada had become a member of NATO around this time with all their members agreeing that it was one for all and all for one.

    Led by Mao Zedong, the Communists took control. Unfortunately this government wasn't recognized by the UN due to the US. It was only later that Canada, along with other nations, decided to acknowledge the Communists. However the US still held the most power in the UN so the other countries could not prevail.

    Supported by European weaponry around 100,000 North Korean troops invaded South Korea. The UN, led by the US, came to support South Korea. This army was created by more than 32 countries and i9ncluded over 26,500 Canadian soldiers. This war ended in July 1953 but Korea remained divided. This war was critical in showing that the UN was willing to take action whereas the League of Nation chose to ignore it.

    The WARSAW Pact was a defensive response toward NATO by the Soviets aligning the Eastern European communist states in a mutually defensive treaty. Canada's part in this pact was an easy one due to the fact that Canada was a member of NATO.

    The Suez Crisis erupted on July 26, 1956 when Egyptian President Abdul Nasser nationalises the Suez Canal Company. The Canal was essential for vital conduit for oil. This caused a break out in war. Pearson proposes the first UN peac-keeping force. He was later chosen to be the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and became prime minister in 1963.

    Vietnam had two foreign powers occupying the country. The countries were Japan and France. Vietnam tried to gain US support but due to the US's policy of Containment they wouldn't help. Instead the US decided to help France defeat Vietnam to avoid the spread of communism. Canada helped the US by taking draft dodgers, who were Americans who evaded the military draft, into safety.

    The wall was built in 1961 because more than 2.6million East Germans escaped to West Berlin of West Germany from 1949 to 1961. The citizens left East Germany due to their dislike of the communist government. The wall was built to prevent any more escapes.

    This crisis began when photographs revealed Soivet missiles were under construction in Cuba. President John Kennedy was informed and immediately organized the EXCOMM, a group of his twelve most important advisors to deal with the crisis. Kennedy later went public with the news and tensions began. However the tensions began to ease on October 28 when Khrushchev announced that he would dismantle and return the missiles to the Soviet Union.

    USSR Invades Afghanistan
    Afghanistan was involved in a civil war due to the fact that the PM, Hazifullah Amin, tried to sweep the nation of Muslim tradition in order to make room for a more westernized country. Amin was also a communist leader. A group called the Mujahideen was created to overthrow Amin.This group also included the Russians who claimed that they didn't invade the country but came to help. Russia eventually overtook the government. USA and the United Nations did nothing to stop this attack.

    During June 12 1987, President Ronald Reagan challenged the Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, to tear down the Berlin Wall in a speech. This was the initiating point in the inevitable fall of the Berlin Wall. Finally 29 months later on November 9, 1989 East Germany opened the Berlin Wall. By the end of the year they started to dismantle the wall
