British Acts And Colonist Reactions

  • Navigation Act

    Navigation Act
    Forced the colonists to transport goods on British ships. They would have to pay taxes at the port if they bought from a foreign country. The colonists started smuggling. So the English passed the Sugar Act and the Writs of Assistance.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    It was passed on October 7th, 1763. The British were moving west so in order to stop them, they made the Proclamation of 1763. The colonists couldn't settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. They were furious when they heard this.
  • Writs Of Assistance

    Writs Of Assistance
    Soldiers could inspect ship’s cargo without reason, the colonists protested that their rights were being violated as British citizens
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    It amended the molasses act, the colonists protested on the thought that they shouldn’t be taxed without representation in Parliament.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    Taxed the colonies on all printed or paper materials. The colonists were mad so they made the Stamp Act Congress. Nine colonies sent delegates to New York. They made petitions against the Stamp Act and sent it to the King and Parliament. The petitions rejected the Stamp Act and said that Parliament did not have the authority to tax the colonists. But Parliament did not care about the these petitions.
  • Declaratory Act

    Repealed the Stamp Act but allowed British officials to tax the colonists whenever they wanted to.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    This act taxed goods like paper, glass, paint, lead, and tea. The colonists were still protesting by the idea that Parliament shouldn’t tax them without representation.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    An act in which Britain kept the Tax on tea to show the Americans that they still had the right to tax them. This caused the Boston Tea Party.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    The act was used to punish the people of Boston for the Boston tea party. They closed the Boston ports until they paid for all the tea they dumped, they did not allow them to self govern their colony, they allowed the British to house troops wherever they wanted, and if a British official was charged with a crime they could be tried in England.
  • Quebec Act

    Quebec Act
    Extended borders of Quebec, the colonists were angry because some of the colonies claimed ownership of these lands
