It amassed a large war debt from England to other countries which needed to be solved. England's solution was to raise taxes in The Colonies. This was when the phrase "No Taxation Without Representation" became a common saying. -

Sugar Act Picture The Sugar Act of 1764 was quite a factor in The Revolution. While it cut the tax on Molasses in half, it started taxation on sugar, certain wines, coffee, pimiento, cambric and calico. It also regulated the trade of lumber and iron. Also The English Navy started enforcing this more, so many smugglers had to switch to the legitimate way of trade. This is an element in Salutory Neglect.
