Betsy was born in Philadelphia, PA. She was the eigth of seventeen children. Born with the name Elizabeth Griscom.

Married John Ross. She was a quaker and he wasnt which created problems. She was "expelled" from her familes home. She was 21 and eloped.

Less than 2 years after their marriage they opened it. Betsy did alot of good needlework. She continued to run it after John died.

At the start of the war John Ross is killed by a gunpowder explosion while on duty. Betsy collected his things. She then began working had on making flags for PA.

Betsy married a man named Joseph Ashburn one year after Johns death. Unfortunetally, Joseph died after being captured on a British ship in 1781.

Betsy married a third time in 1783. Married to John Claypoole. John died after 34 years in 1817 of a life long disability.

Betsy dies at 84 in Philadelphia. Years after her death her grandson shares that she made the flag. Betsy was a very important person in American History. She passed away in her sleep.
