Berlin 1945-1990

  • Berlin Division

World War II is over and Berlin was separated. It was put into 4 sectors that included the American, British, French in the west and the Soviet in the East. This is where the division of Berlin started.
  • Interzonepass

To travel to Germany you now need a 30-day Interzone pass to travel between parts of Germany. This was to regulate who was crossing into other parts of the country. This was another way for the government to establish the power they held.
  • Currency Reform

Two different parts of Berlin wanted a different type of currency. The city of Berlin was then split into two different currency zones. In order to pay on that side, you had to have the correct currency type. This was another way the divide started.
  • Leaving is Forbidden

Leaving East Germany without permission from the government is now forbidden. If you are caught violating this you can spend up to 3 years in prison. They didn't want people leaving without them knowing.
  • Building the Wall

The building of the Berlin Wall also known as the Iron Curtain. It was built in attempt to divide the city in half. This was because they wanted to separate fascists from communists.
  • Border Closed

The border between east and west Berlin is now closed. Barriers are now built to keep the separation. No one is allowed to cross to the other side or could be punished by death.
  • Visiting

West Berliner citizens may now travel to East Berlin for the first time in more than 2 years. This was still regulated and few people actually did visit. They were scared they wouldn't be able to return home if they crossed.
  • USA visit

Ronald Reagan visits Berlin and urges them to tear down the wall. Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, refused to do so. Ronald Reagan kept trying because he knew it would soon cause an uprising.
  • Berlin Wall is opened

Due to the uprising the wall was finally opened. Border patrol was not ready for this many people to charge the wall. It was supposed to be regulated who could cross and how many but they ended up opening it fully.
  • Reunited

After many years of division, Germany is finally reunited as one. This happened after the opening of the Berlin wall as well as the Brandenburg gate. Many families were reunited and Ronald Reagan approved.
