  • Ft. Sumter

    Ft. Sumter
    The confederate States of America attacked the united states military garrison, only one soldier (U.S.) lost his life.
  • Secession of Virginia

    Western counties of Virginia were antislavery, so they seceded from Virginia and became West Virginia
  • Battle at Bull Run

    The first major bloodshed happened here, both sides think they will be done with this "war" within hours.
  • Battle at Shiloh

    Confederate forces attack on union while they wait for reinforcements, caused 23,500 men to be killed 1/4 of which were fighting.
  • Battle at Richmond

    (Kentucky) Confederate victory against General Smith against Unions major Nelson.
  • Battle at Antietam

    One of only two victories fought in the north. Lee invaded Maryland hoping they would join the confederacy. Lee is pinned down at Antietam creek and union forces south back to Virginia.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    It did not free any slaves immediately because it only applied to confederate areas outside union control
  • Battle at Gettysburg

    Little round top- union soldiers had to hold the advantage on the hill.
    Pickett's charge- The confederate attempt to launch a frontal assault on the unions strong hold.
    Union wins and south retreat.

  • Surrender at Appomattox

    Confederate general Lee surrendered his army of northern Virginia to to union Genera; Ulysses S Grant but it resulted in battle at the Appomattox court house, which lasted only a few hours.
  • The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

    Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head by confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln died the next morning.
