  • Ball's Bluff

    The Battle of Ball's Bluff is also known as the Battle of Harrison’s Island or the Battle of Leesburg It was fought on October 21, 1861, in Loudoun County, Virginia, as part of Union Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan's operations in Northern Virginia during the American Civil War.
  • Fort Sumter

    At Charleston, South Carolina, Brig. Gen. Beaurgard demaned the surrender of the Union garrison of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor.
  • First Bull Run

    It was the first major battle of the armies in Virginia. The untried Union army under Brig. Gen. Irvin McDowell was against the Confederate Army.
  • Fort Henry

    A Confederate earthen fort on the Tennessee River with outdated guns, was partially inundated and the river threatened to flood the rest. Feb 4-5, Brig. Gen, U.S. Grant landed his divisions in two different locations. Appalachians and the Mississippi River was then used for the troops for traveling.
  • Fort Donelson

    After capturing Fort Henry, Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant advanced cross-country to invest Fort Donelson. After the failure, the fort's 12,000-man garrison surrenedered.

It is located in the middle of the state about three miles northwest of the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, once known as Clover Hill; home of the original Old Appomattox Court House.
  • Antietam

    Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan confronted Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at Sharpsburg, Maryland. On September 17, Hooker's corps mounted a powerful assault on Lee's left flank that beginthe single bloodiest day. McClellan didn't renew the assaults. Lee ordered the battered Army of Northern Virginia to withdraw across the Potomac into Shenandoah Valley.
