Kennedy won the election to become a Senator for New York. As a Senator, he championed civil rights and social justice issues. He traveled abroad to advocate for human rights, and spoke out against the Vietnam War.

Kennedy delivered a speech to celebrate the California primary win. He was shot moments after his speech, in a kitchen corridor outside the ballroom of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angelos. He died the next day of his injuries at age 42.

Kennedy's funeral was held at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. The youngest Kennedy sibling, Edward "Ted" Kennedy gave a famous eulogy for his brother.

Sirhan Bishara Sirhan, a Palestinian immigrant, was convicted of Robert F. Kennedy's murder and sentenced to death. Later, California outlawed the death penalty and his death sentence was commuted to life in prison.
