The time period that makes up the Art Nouveau movement is mildly contested, with different sources offering slightly different dates The starting point, in 1890, seems to be widely agreed upon whereas the end date varies. The National Gallery of Art considers the period to last from 1890-1914, so these are the dates I went with. http://www.nga.gov/content/ngaweb/exhibitions/2000/nouveau.html.

Horta "heralded the modern movement of Art Nouveau architecture." The work is characterized by its "open plan, diffusion and transformation of light throughout the construction, the creation of a decor that brilliantly illustrates the curved lines of decoration embracing the structure of the building, the use of new materials (steel and glass) and the introduction of modern technical utilities."

"Indicative of Beardsley's mature style, this image speaks to the artist's fascination with the Japanese aesthetic - an interest he shared with Whistler and other late nineteenth-century painters. This characteristic combined with flowing, arabesque lines, strict two-dimensionality, and decorative patterns, make The Peacock Skirt a superb example of early Art Nouveau." http://www.theartstory.org/artist-beardsley-aubrey-artworks.htm.

"Guimard designed the iconic metro entrances made out of iron in swirling organic forms. Guimard was influenced by Victor Horta - whose finest work was seen in his usage of iron and how it could be used to mould pillars and beams into ‘living’ curves. Horta would study plants and flowers and look to replicate them ornamentally with his usage of iron and glass." http://thedelightsofseeing.blogspot.com/2011/02/art-nouveau.html.
