    The Colombian exchange

    The Colombian exchange was a time period in which goods were exchanged between the Americas, Europe, and Africa.
  • 1493

    Columbus reports his first voyage

    Columbus reported his first voyage in 1493 describing his journey across the Atlantic.
  • 1512

    Encomienda System

    The Encomienda system was were conquistadors and other leaders were given grants from the natives in which they could tribute in form of gold/labor. Many settlers used this system to enslave the natives and take their land.

    Religious battles in the New world

    After the death of Martin Luther, a German monk sparked the start of the protestant reformation. The protestant kingdoms in northern Europe where committed to combating the expansion of catholicism

    Rise of Atlantic slave trade

    The first record of a voyage which was part of the slave trade was a ship which departed from Africa and landed in Santo Domingo on the island of Hispaniola.
  • 1555

    Tobacco arrives in Europe

    English settlers found new economic opportunities in Europe due to the high growth of tobacco in the New world.
  • Sir Francis drakes attack on saint Augustine.

    After leading the first English circumnavigation of the globe, Sir Francis Drake led an attack against Spanish settlements in St Augustine as well as the Caribbean and other islands in Hispaniola. St Augustine is now known as present day Florida.
  • The colony of Jamestown was founded

    English settlers were in search of gold and silver. When settlers reached Jamestown, they were met with sickness and disease. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement
  • Pilgrims land

    Separatists also known as the pilgrims were settlers in search of religious freedom. These pilgrims arrived in New England aboard the Mayflower. In 1620, the Mayflower Compact was signed and it was the first governing document of the Plymouth colony.

    New amsterdam

    Dutch settlers colonized the land which included present day New York,Delaware, New Jersey, and Connecticut. This land was ethnically diverse. James II of England dispatched colonial Nichols to seize the colony.
  • Anne Hutchinson Banished

    Anne Hutchinson was a puritan who was born in Massachusetts. She was known for organizing religious meetings for women and challenging the political authority of the clergy. As a result Anne hutchinson was excommunicated from the colony of Massachusetts for being a woman not fit for society
  • The Half Way covenant

    Puritans established the halfway covenant which was an agreement which extended the partial church membership to members of the church.
  • King Phillips war

    A leader named Phillip who was an Englishman, led the most fatal war in American history. This war was a result of English settlers wanting to subject the native New England population to colonial control.

    The pueblo revolt

    In present day mexico, The people of pueblo coordinated a uprising against the Spanish at many of their settlements which scattered across hundreds of miles. The natives killed more than 400 Spaniards and destroyed many of their churches and infrastructure.

    This was the second out of the four great wars which were fought between France and England which were both supported by indian allies.

    The middle passage was a passage which was a way to transport slaves from the African continent to the new world.
  • Slave revolt in the west indies

    Slavery predominated in the west Indies more specifically the Caribbean islands. Slavery was important due to Commerce and trade in the colony's.
  • Slave codes

    King george issued a proclamation which declared slaves real estate. This proclamation did not prohibit the classification of saves as property. The system of slavery was different across the colonies and involved working on large plantations, task systems and skilled labor work.
