Suspension from private school
One day David and Karen had received the phone call from the dean of the private school that Nic was attending, and told them that Nic was suspended for buying drugs. Nic's high school graduation
On a sunny late spring afternoon, the whole family was on the school’s athletic field attending Nic’s high school graduation. Nic then was called up to the podium to accept his high school diploma; he kissed the school head, and walked off. David thought that this was a turning point in his and Nic’s life. David told himself that maybe everything is alright, and that just maybe Nic’s addiction and health will stay like this. -
Nic gets arrested
One Sunday afternoon, two patrol officers pulled into the family’s driveway. David thought they needed directions, but instead they walk past David, handcuff Nic, and put him in the back of the patrol car. Later on, David finds out that the arrest was made as the result of Nic’s failure to appear in court after being cited for marijuana possession. Nic goes to college
Nic’s college of choice was California Berkley, which is the college that he decided to attend. The first couple days of college, Nic seemed to be very into college, which made David confident that Nic had changed up his life, and was enjoying college. One night after Nic had dropped out of California Berkley, he missed the curfew that his father had given to him. With his father freaking out, David decided to call Nic’s friends, and therapist. Nic's first take at rehab
After Nic’s disappearance for days, David decides it is time for Nic to go to rehab. When Nic shows up to the house, he falls asleep, and then wakes up to his father demanding that he attends a rehab center for his crystal meth addiction. David then brings Nic to Thunder Road in Oakland the next day, and at the rehab center they explain to David that Nic is in serious trouble. They recommend that Nic goes to another rehab center, so that he can get proper treatment for his addiction. -
Nic moves to New York
Nic, who has had a tough time overcoming his meth addiction, agrees to move to New York with family. His family thought that New York would be a better place to detox then San Francisco was. While in New York, Nic decided to try to access his father’s bank account, by making a $500 check to himself, but it was denied due to the bank account being closed. One day, David receives a phone call from Nic’s stepfather, and he tells David that Nic is in serious condition at the hospital from overdosing -
Nic goes to Hazelden
David had thought that Nic’s overdose was the last incident, so he persuaded Nic to go to Hazelden drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in New York. Nic seemed to be doing great in Hazelden, he would check in with David from time to time, and he was attending AA meetings on a weekly basis. A couple months after Nic first started attending Hazelden, they closed the doors due not having enough funds to keep the program running. -
1 year of sobriety
Due to Hazelden closing its doors, Nic decided to move back to Los Angeles to live near Vicki. Once he settles into Los Angeles, Nic starts attending Herbert House, a sober-living house in Culver City. Nic then meets an AA sponsor named Randy, a man who Nic eventually becomes great friends with, goes on long bikes rides with along the Pacific Coast Highway, and is an inspiration to Nic. In September, Nic celebrated his 1 year of sobriety, and the start of his relationship with a girl named Z. -
Nic's first relapse
Nic’s relapse first started a month after his 1 year of sobriety, when Nic stopped returning David’s phone calls. Every time David tried calling Nic, Nic’s phone was turned off and went straight to voicemail. Still with no contact with Nic, Nic broke into his family’s house, and ransacked David’s desk drawers. The next day, David finds out that Nic had broken into another house in Inverness, but then Nic retreated before being caught. -
Nic's recovery
With Nic trying everything in his power to overcome his addiction, he sends Jasper a letter explaining that he was sorry for stealing Jasper’s 8 dollars, and Nic ended up repaying him by putting the money in the letter. This was the start of Nic’s sobriety again, but even with the prayers from his family, and the long stretch of sobriety, Nic can’t withstand the powerful disease that he has obtained, addiction. -
Nic's 2nd relapse
After all the hard work to stay sober, and to live a normal live, Nic relapses with his girlfriend Z. David calls Nic, and has a conversation with Nic about his relapse. Nic tells his father that he and Z have been using speedballs, and crystal meth. David knows that this was the worst thing that could have happened, because Nic, once again gave away his long stretch of sobriety for drugs.
