    The United States had become involved in the Korean War through the U.N. South and North Korea fought in a battle of Communism vs Capitalism. In the end the war was a draw.

    The Soviet Union and the USA were engaged in the Cold War and space race. Sputnik became the first ever satellite to be launched into space, putting the Russians in the lead in the space race.

    The U.S. had a situation where the Russians had placed ,missiles in Cuba, giving them first strike capabilities. The U.S. had almost started a war but in the end the situation was diffused and the missiles were withdrawn
