    Détente

    Détente is a french word meaning release of tension which is used to describe a period of decreased tension between the U.S. and the USSR. This was the result of seven agreements signed by Nixon during a trip to the USSR. These agreements included SALT which decreased nuclear tensions, some cooperative scientific work, and a deal allowing U.S. grain to be exported to the USSR. This meeting between Nixon and Brezhnev was also significant as it was the first time a U.S. president entered the USSR.

    Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT)
    The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks occurred between the United States and the Soviet Union. The resulting agreement entailed the cease of production of nuclear missiles in both countries, as well as a reduction of both of their nuclear arsenals to 200 missiles.

    Jimmy Carter began his presidency in 1977 and declared a foreign policy of "Constant Decency". The staple of this policy was that Carter's foreign policy would focus centrally on the defense of Human Rights worldwide. This influenced many of his decisions and policies which he issued during his presidency.

    Protracted crisis began in 1979 when Islamic militants seized the American embassy in Tehran, Iran, and held scores of its employees hostage. The militant had been enraged by American support for the deposed South of Iran. The crisis, which lasted over a year, contributed to President Jimmy Carter's defeat in his reelection campaign in 1980

    USSR is Dissolved
    Following the resignation of Mikhail Gorbachev after an attempted military coup, the control of the USSR was transferred to Boris Yeltsin. Yeltsin immediately dissolved the USSR into independent states and assumed the presidency of Russia. This ended the cold war as the USSR was no longer existent to spread communism and oppose the U.S..

    This tragic event was the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center in the U.S.. This event was devastating to the U.S. people as 2 planes slammed into the WTC at 500 miles per hour collapsing the towers and killing hundreds of people. This prompted Bush to create the department of Homeland Security and to begin the "War on Terror" which altered U.S. foreign policy significantly.

    The Afghanistan war is being fought to destroy the al-Qaeda terrorist group, responsible for the 9/11 attacks, as well as the Taliban government, which was sympathetic to their cause. It is yet to end.
