    Bacchanalia event book burning

    In the 2nd Century B.C., the Bacchanalia event, books containing oracles burned to prevent spread of foreign customs. This event is on my timeline, because it occurs in Rome during a time period which I am fascinated about.
  • 48 BCE

    Caesar Invades Egypt

    During the civil wars between Caesar and Pompey, Alexandria was burned, which possibly included the famed library of Alexandria being burned to the ground. This caused the loss of scores of scrolls to be lost to the fires, which possibly included the famous works of the Greek Epic Cycle (a series of works written about the Trojan War).
  • Library of Congress

    The British burn the first Library of Congress during the War of 1812. This causes the loss of scores of important documents and books. After the war, Thomas Jefferson donates his library to the LOC to help in re-starting/re-building the library. This event is on my timeline, because it is a famous event in United States history.

  • Nazi Book Burning

    When the Nazi Party rose to power in the 1930s, they almost immediately started book burning. This was the beginning of what transpired during the rest of the 1930s in Germany and in the 1940s. I chose this event because it is one of the most famous instances of book banning and burning in recent memory.

    This book was banned and challenged first in 1966. I chose this book, because like Of Mice and Men, it is a popular book to read by high school students. It is challenged because of the racial slurs and profanity that appears in the book and people think that kids should not be exposed to it. Lee, H. (1960). To kill a mockingbird. J. B.   • Jaffna Public Library

    In 1981, in Sri Lanka, an organized mob burnt the Jaffna Public Library. The library contained over 97,000 books and manuscripts, which all was lost when the library burned. It was one of the most violent acts of biblioclasm in the 20th century. I chose this event because it is one of the largest known forms of biblioclasm in recorded history.
