Apatheid Timeline

  • Founding of The ANC

    South Africa's governing political party. Defines itself as a "Disciplined force of the left." Was founded to increase the rights of the black South African population.
  • Congress Youth League Is Formed

    Formed by members of ANC who believed in African Nationalism and wanted to follow an active policy focused on the mobilisation of the masses.
  • Defiance Campaign

    Began with a commitment to militant African nationalism and mass action to tatics pf boycotts, strikes, and civil disobedience. Largest non- violent resistance ever seen in South Africa. First campaign pursued jointly by all racial groups under leader ship of ANC and SAIC.
  • Sharpville Massacre

    On March 1960 a liberation group informed the commisoner of police that his organization would embark a disciplined non-violent camoaigns for five days. starting on the 21st of september. Objective of the march was to allow themselves to be arrested. A crowd gathered around 10 am that was a total of 5000. 4000 went to a park to be arrested near the police station. All the large groups went to the closest police station ready to be arrested. protestors die.
  • Albert Luthuli Wins the Noble Peace Prize

  • Spear of the Nation Is Formed

    More easiy called MK. Was launched as an armed wing of the ANC. Formed the day when the Zulus were defeated at the Battle of the Blood River. It was difficult to work for the ANC were so used to the Non-violent approach.
  • Nelson Mandela Sentenced To Life In Prison

    He encouraged Africans to go on strike and leave South Africa illegally. Was also head of MK, the violent part of ANC, and after coming back to South Africa from talking to other head leaders he was arrested and thrown into prison.
  • The Soweto Uprising

    Soweto high schoolers started to protest for better education. Police responded with teargas and live bullets. Many lost their lives for higher Bantu Education.
  • Steve Biko Dies In Police Custody

    He was interrogated and it lasted twenty two hours and included torture and beatings resulting in a coma. He died of massive head trauma.
  • Desmond Tutu Wins the Nobel Peace Prize

    Won the nobel peace prize because of his role in the non-violent fight against apartheid. Was the first African to win the Nobel Prize.
  • Nelson Mandela Realeased From Prison

    Released from prison because white control is finallly over in south africa
  • Nelson Mandela Becomes President of South Africa
