Anti Jewish Laws in Pre-War Germany

  • The Enabling Act

    The Enabling Act
    The Enabling Act was passed by Nazi Germany around the time they first gained power to eliminate all the Jews in Germany. These acts were also called "The Law for Terminating the Suffering of People and Nation". This law allowed the Nazis to perform any act even if it violated human rigts.
  • The Jewish Boycott

    The Jewish Boycott
    Hitler passed a law to boycott all Jewish shops and businesses. Hitler justified this by blaming the Jews for all of Germany's atrocities. There were posters made staing that if the citizens of Germany bought from Jewish stores they were traitors.
  • Aryan Laws

    Aryan Laws
    The Aryan Law was the first Anti-Semitic law passed by the Nazis. The Jews weren't allowed to work in certain professions such as doctors, teachers, and writers. If you were non-Aryan (Jewish) then you were expelled from your job. Since Hitler stated that Jews dominated Germany even though Jews made up less than 1% percent of the population.
  • Berlin Book Burning

    Berlin Book Burning
    Students at the Berlin University started book burnings in order to eliminate everything Jewish. Josef Goebbels said, at this burning, that by doing this act they whipped out the extereme Jewish intellectualism. Book in libraries were taken away and nearly one third of all of Germany's library books were gone.
  • Nuremberg Laws

    Nuremberg Laws
    The Nuremberg Laws stated that Jews could not marry the German citizens who weren't Jewish and that Jews couldn't display the German's national flag. The Nuremberg laws also said that Jews weren't allowed to vote in political affairs. Many signs were put up saying, "Jews not wanted here" and even Jewsish property had to be registered to the government. Eventually the Jews were kicked out of Germany and forced to live in Poland.
  • Jewish Name Changes

    Jewish Name Changes
    The Nazis made Jews alter their names by adding "Sarah" or "Israel" to their middle names. The Nazis did this to recognize every Jew in Germany. The letter "j" or the word "jude" was put on to the Jewish peoples' passports to show that they were Jewish.
  • Night of the Broken Glass

    Night of the Broken Glass
    The Nazis planned for this attack to the Jewish people. The Nazis wanted to pretend the SS were German citiziens expressing thier "rage at the murderous acts of the Jews". One thousand Jews were killed that night and more than 30,000 men were sent to concentration camps. The Jews then were forced to repay for all the damages and the fine was one million reichsmarks.
  • Jewish Star Requirment

    Jewish Star Requirment
    The Jewish people had to were the Jewish star as a marker of their Jewish background and lifestyle. This badge was seen as "a mark of shame" to the Jews. In October of 1941 the Jews were not allowed to even leave thier homes when they wanted to. The Jewish people couldn't leave the country either.
