  • The Animal Welfare Institute was established.

    The Animal Welfare Institute was established.
    Their goal was/is to stop humans from harming animals.
  • Laboratory Animal Welfare Act signed.

    Authorized the Secretary of Agriculture to regulate transport, sale, and handling of dogs, cats, primates, guinea pigs, hamsters, and rabbits intended to be used in research or "for other purposes." Dealers must be licensed and laboratories must be registered.
  • 1st amendment to the Act

    Renamed to the "Animal Welfare Act" , making it so that the protection was to all warm-blooded animals in laboratories.
  • The cause for the 1976 Act.

    An undercover film was taken at a dog-fighting event showed the violence of these entertainment events. The film showed light of the abuse and activists jumped on the wagon to get the Act passed.
  • Labs in NYC were closed.

    Spira organized his first campaign of demonstrations against animal experimentation at the American Museum of Natural History in New York in 1976. The labs were closed the following year.
  • 2nd amendment to the Act

    Regulates carriers, intermediate handlers and animal brokers, so as to require adherence to humane standards;specify that all dogs including: dogs for hunting and security or breeding purposes, be protected; require a veterinarian’s certificate for animals in interstate transport; and require all federal agencies including the Army, Air Force and National Institutes of Health using laboratory animals to show they fully comply with the Act.
  • Co-founder of PETA finds abuse in lab.

    Alex Pacheco, co-founder of the newly formed group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (“PETA”), volunteered in the research laboratory of Dr. Edward Taub at the Institute for Biological Research in Silver Spring, Maryland. He documented many violations of the AWA, and prompted the Montgomery County police to save 17 monkeys from the lab. The case, led to many legal trials and was highly publicized in newspapers nationwide.
  • Improved Standards for Laboratory Animals Act

    Improved the standards for Lab Animals by "humane care" by mentioning specifics such as sanitation, housing, and ventilation.Also established regulations to provide exercise for dogs and an adequate physical environment to promote the psychological well-being of primates. It specifies that pain and distress must be minimized in all procedures. It also defines practices that are considered to be painful. No animal can be used in more than one major operative experiment with recovery.
  • Pet Theft Act

    Required pounds to hold dogs and cats for five days before releasing them to dealers. The Act is amended even further to allow the USDA to seek injunctions against any licensed facility found dealing in stolen animals or placing the health of any animal in serious danger in violation of the Act.
  • Farm Bill

    It includes language changing the definition of “animal” under the AWA to specifically exclude birds, rats of the genus Rattus and mice of the genus Mus, bred for use in research. (The excluded animals constitute approximately 95% of all animals in research.)
  • Animal Fighting Prohibition Act

    This bill amends the AWA to prohibit knowingly selling, buying, transporting, or delivering, in interstate or foreign commerce, a knife, a gaffe, or any other sharp instrument for attachment to the leg of a bird for use in an animal fighting venture.
  • Ringling Bros. states closing in May 2017

    The major circus has had $15.75 million in fines. They had to get rid of the elephants preforming last May. Ticket sales have been extremely low since. The last shows will be in May of 2017.
