    Eratosthenes

    276-195 B.C.
Used the sun to calculate the size of the Earth. This discovary proved that the Earth was not flat.

    Claudius Ptolemy

    90-168 A.D.
He constructed a model of the solar system that included planets and the stars that suggested that the solar system revolved around the Earth. This discovery was proven wrong however it led to the discovery that the system revolves around the Sun.
  • 1511

    Nicolaus Copernicus

    1473 - 1543
He created the model of the solar system in terms of the system revoling around the Sun not the Earth. This discovary is important because it helped establish the structure of our solar system that we know today. This model has inspired other models for other exoplanets and their planetary systems. Because of this model we know and can continue to learn about other solar systems thanks to the example presided by copernicus.
  • 1565

    Tycho Brahe

Tycho invented many tools to measure and observe the positions of celestial objects. These discoveries and inventions are important because they more accurately measured the stars and their positions to create a more relevant structure of the universe. They are also reponsible for aiding in the discovery of many more celestial objects.
  • Johannes Kepler

Kepler uncovered that the orbit of planets was not circular but elliptical. With this knowledge we were able to chart the orbits of not only the planets in our solar system but other planetary systems. We've put a man on the moon, put rovers on mars and sent a satellite to saturn with the help of this knowledge.
  • Sir Isaac Newton

Newton studied natural forces between objects, mostly gravity. He developed three laws of motion that assist in the understanding of basic physics and the structure of the universe.
  • Albert Einstein

Einstein explained that the physics we experience here on Earth are applied and motion throughout the whole univerese. Making that connection has led to a number of spacial missions and helped make countless discoveries.
