    President Richard Nixon
    Richard Nixon was elected into office on January 20, 1969. Things in his presidency started off great. The highlight of his presidency is not great at all, as it was the Watergate Scandal. After the scandal, rather than be impeached, he resigned on August 9, 1974. Nixon was important during this time period for bringing about the Watergate Scandal.

    Watergate Scandal
    The Watergate Scandal is a break-in into the Watergate Hotel one of Washington's finest hotels. A security guard slowed things down and helped not let the scandal follow through. President Nixon was involved and had White House tapes to prove he was guilty. Nixon was to be either impeached or resign, he chose to resign. The Watergate Scandal was an important event, because it led to the fall of a president, in which people thought was the greatest, but in reality obviously wasn't.
  • Munich Olympics

    Munich Olympics
    The Munich Olympics of 1972 is known for the massacre that occured. This massacre killed six Israeli coaches, five Israeli athletes, five members of Black September, and one West German police officer. The group Black September are the ones who did the kidnapping of the hostages and murdered them. Three members got away, but were later captured. Anyone who was thought to be involved in the massacre was killed. This important event is the only olympics that has gotten eleven people killed.

    Energy Crisis
    The energy crisis is where Arabians called for an embargo on oil, because the U.S supplied Israel with weapons. To compromise and have the embargo lifted, the U.S decided to not supply parts of Israel and the Arabs agreed to lift the ban in 1974. This embargo made high gas prices, caused recession, and some places no fuel at all. If this would have kept on depression could have been the outcome.

    President Gerald Ford
    President Gerald Ford is the man who took Nixon's place when he resigned. Ford had many difficult things to face when coming into office; inflation, the recession, energy shortages, and bring on world peace. He also granted Nixon a full pardon. He was a significant figure of this time, because he fixed many problems Nixon made that could have reflected into today.

    President Jimmy Carter
    President Jimmy Carter won the election of 1977 against Republican Ford. Carter worked to also help with the inflation Nixon caused, but this was extrememly difficult. However, President Carter did create an estimate of 8,000 more jobs for the Americans. A huge highlight while he was in office is The Iran hostage crisis, where the Irans held 52 Americans hostage. They were realeased when Carter left office in 1980. Carter was important for beginning to get America back on track.
  • Chernobyl / Three Mile Island Accident

    Chernobyl / Three Mile Island Accident
    The accident that took place at Chernobyl was awful. A steam explosion caused radioactivity to be released, killing at least 30 people from radiation poisoning. This event was very significant for the reasons of many deaths due to the explosion, making it hard for settlement soon after. All these years later, people are still nervous about living in this area, for fear of lingering radiation in the soil.

    Iran Hostage Crisis
    The Iran Hostage Crisis is what helped push Jimmy Carter out of office. Irans held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. The Irans had originally showed up not meaning harm, but Americans didn't trust this causing the Irans to change their minds and ended with the Americans being kidnapped. They were released right before Reagan was elected into office when the Algiers Accords was signed. This was significant because it brought a pleasant beginning to Reagan's presidency, a highlight for him.

    1980 Olympic Hockey Team "Miracle on Ice"
    The 1980 American Olympic Hockey team defeated the Soviets who had won repeatedly since 1954. Then went on and defeated Finland winning the gold medal at the Olympics. Today this event is known as "the miracle on ice" referring to the fact this has never happened since. The 1980 team opened eyes of many people, making them realize how good they really were. This event was very significant for two reasons; we won a gold medal against Soviets, and they made history in being the only team to do so.

    President Ronald Reagan was elected into office on this day in history. He is one president to be shot, but fully recover and return to his job. Reagan is known for bringing us out of recession and also being the only president to keep us out of recession, depression, or inflation during the entire presidency. Reagan is a powerful person in this time because of all the things he did for our economy.
  • Discovery of AIDS

    Discovery of AIDS
    AIDS known as "acquired immune deficiency syndrome", was discovered on this day in history found for being a deadly illness. The cause of AIDS was learned to be HIV. This terrible disease kills the body's immune system, allowing the human to get diseases and illness much easier. This is significant, because the finding of AIDS has also allowed us to know ways to prevent spreading the deadly disease. If we had no knowlege on this three times as more people could be infected today.
  • Iran Contra Affair

    The Iran Contra Affair was a secret arrangement that gave funds to Nicaraguan by selling weapons to Iran. Reagan was president during the time of this affair. In 1986 we were forced to close the tie when it was reported in Lebenese newspapers. This event was significant because it shows how secretive our government is about helping certain countries. It also caused tension between us and Nicaragua.

    On this day in history a horrible tragedy occured. The Challenger exploded killing the first woman to ever go up to space. This event is very significant because it was the only one to explode and kill people.

    George H.W Bush was elected into office on January 20, 1989. His presidency was highlighted by all the changes that occured; the fall of the Berlin Wall, Cold War ending, economy coming back completely, and the huge fight with Sedam Hussein. His presidency is significant for the positve changes that were brought about.
